Silo season 2 episode 4 recap: The Harmonium

Silo season 2 episode 4 recap: The Harmonium

As a long-time enthusiast of post-apocalyptic narratives, I must say that Silo season 2 is truly living up to my expectations. The slow burn of the plot development, reminiscent of the gradual decay of civilization in the storyline, keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next piece of the puzzle to fall into place.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that Silo season 2 has been a gradual build-up of tension, culminating in the brewing rebellion we all anticipated. In episode 4 of this season, Juliette and Solo managed to make significant strides in their mission to get her back home. However, it seems there might not be a home for her to return to.

In sticking to The Order’s manual, Bernard finds Meadows as his primary adversary. Yet, could his choice to accuse Mechanical of a terrible event ultimately doom the whole silo?

The current state of Juliette’s silo

Currently, multiple subplots are unfolding concurrently. One of these involves Bernard and Meadows, who find themselves at odds over the best next step. While Bernard advocates for adhering to the procedure outlined in The Order’s handbook, Meadows is pushing for a more modern and creative approach.

When Bernard isn’t clashing with Meadows, he’s spending time with Sims, who is growing increasingly self-reliant and prefers to work independently rather than under Bernard. Meanwhile, tension arises with Mechanical, which could potentially lead to a rebellion, as they seek clarification on certain issues.

Last but not least is Sheriff Billings and his separate investigation into Juliette’s sentence. He has, thus far, been flying under both Bernard and Sims’ radar.

Let’s kick things off by discussing Billings’ case, as it seems to have taken an unexpected twist during his recent encounter with Hank, a former Mechanical department colleague. It was during this meeting that Billings discovered details about Cooper’s death, which transpired in the previous episode.

Choosing to pay a visit to the morgue, Hank grows furious when one corpse is found to be absent. Previously, Cooper’s body was there, but another – presumably the man who helped Juliette in the previous season and had requested to erase all memories, including his wife’s passing – was also missing.

Following Billings and Hank’s confirmation of the presence of two bodies, only to discover one has vanished, they now find themselves navigating treacherous situations.

Returning to the topic of Sims, he’s been discussing the predicament with Meadows with his spouse, who proposes impeachment as a solution. It was widely acknowledged that Meadows had a drinking problem and hadn’t been in good spirits for quite some time.

This arises because she is a figure from Bernard’s past, but this fact isn’t widely known among the other parts of the silo. Sims chooses to heed his wife’s counsel since several disgruntled residents linger near Meadow’s office.

However, unaware of this, Sims finds himself lagging behind; Bernard has already moved on one step further. Amidst the increasing chaos, Meadows manages to converse with Lukas, the young man who harbored feelings for Juliette and was subsequently exiled to the mines as a consequence.

In a private conversation with Lukas, Meadows clarifies that the lights he observes at night are actually stars. Moreover, she confirms that his assumptions about Earth and the sun are accurate. Later, Meadows reduces his punishment by half, meaning he will serve only 5 years in the mines instead of 10.

This kind act leaves both Lukas and Bernard surprised. Even though Meadows suggests Lukas may not live beyond a year in the mines, it seems she’s wishing for him to endure the punishment and regain his liberty eventually.

As a follower, it appears that a potential resolution to the escalating chaos in our silo might be just on the horizon, as Meadows has scheduled a meeting with Knox and Shirley from Mechanical, along with Walker and Carla. However, before this encounter, Bernard has graciously invited me over for dinner at his place.

The betrayal

During their shared meal, Meadows senses an issue arising. It transpires that Bernard had laced the mushrooms with a harmful substance, thinking it was necessary because Meadows persistently sought actions counter to The Order’s teachings.

Prior to her death, he arranges for her to view, through a virtual reality headset, picturesque scenes of Costa Rica. This shared experience, though bittersweet, takes place before she passes on. As scheduled, Sims appears afterwards.

Now, Bernard is able to concentrate on his primary objective, which involves getting together with Knox, Shirley, Walker, and Carla. Remarkably, they just made it in time amidst the sea of protesters. Yet, even they possess a well-thought-out strategy.

When someone throws a red ball from the top of the stairs, the mechanical system detects this action and automatically shuts down all power in the silo. If it spots Meadows, it will restart the power again.

Bernard guarantees entry for just two of them, and upon throwing a green ball outside, the power is restored. With this assurance, Knox and Shirley choose to accompany Bernard.

Unexpectedly, they stumbled upon Meadows, deceased due to a stab wound, in her office. Meanwhile, Sims was there waiting for them. It appears they’ve been framed, and as they rush off to reunite with Walker and Carla, Sims reveals to the rioters that it was them who killed Meadows.

The crowd rushes the stairs, following the four down towards Mechanical.

Juliette’s solution

In the meantime, it seems Juliette’s fortune could be turning around since she and Solo join forces to help her find a replacement suit. While Juliette is putting in effort, Solo revisits an untouched silo that brings back fond memories of his old classroom and books he used to read there.

Whenever Juliette queries further about him, attempting to uncover his identity and the story behind his injured eye, Solo instead redirects the conversation, dodging her inquiries. Finding a suitable outfit might be straightforward, but expelling the toxic atmosphere for her to reenter her silo is anything but simple.

Despite both Solo and Juliette still being capable of playing the organ, they decide to utilize various parts of it that are suitable. Yet, as the days pass, Solo becomes increasingly uneasy and concerned about the safety of their hideout.

As Juliette plunges into the water to cross over to the other side, she discovers a fireproof suit ideal for re-emerging outdoors. When she comes back, it appears that Solo is hurrying towards the vault yet seems to have misplaced the entry code.

In a state of panic, he realizes that he has just three attempts left, after which he’ll be denied entry. Fortunately, he recalls the code successfully on his third try and hastens inside.

Her unusual and sudden actions perplex Juliette as she attempts to draw him closer again. She reflects on their recent conversation where he was joyful about the circus and the various animals that used to roam freely.

As Solo exits the vault once more, let’s hope he’s prepared to help suit up Juliette, enabling her to make her way back home.

Silo season 2 episode 4 review: Is The Order secretly working against silos?

Although we noted that season 2 has developed gradually, this isn’t always a negative aspect. Similar to the previous season, season 2 will consist of ten episodes, providing ample room for story development.

It’s nearly unclear if Bernard has a clear understanding of his actions or not. He adheres strictly to rules, yet by accusing Mechanical, he essentially incited an uproar.

It seems like he intended for the entire group of four to be eliminated by the mob, so that none could return and disclose what transpired in Meadows. However, it’s clear now that the silo cannot function without Mechanical. They’ve just demonstrated their ability to cut off power whenever they want, even at a moment’s notice.

It seems as though he isn’t aware that if this same group is held responsible for Meadow’s death, a riot will still occur. Unless he has information that we don’t, it appears he might be guiding the silo towards the very rebellion he aims to suppress.

Is this action in accordance with The Order’s guidelines, or is it a deliberate move? It’s the predicament involving Billings and Hank that has me concerned.

It seems that they have gathered enough information already, and when they become aware of Meadows’ demise, the situation could deteriorate further. The question is, how much longer until Sims uncovers their activities?

When will it be their turn to be eliminated, or can they manage to send the required backup forces for Mechanical?

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel the tension rising with each level, more perilous than the last. Here’s hoping that in the upcoming episode, our character Juliette will return home at last. Truth be told, while it’s crucial to delve deeper into her silo, I can’t help but wish the storyline would advance a tad quicker too.
