Silo season 2 episode 1 recap and review: The Engineer
As a die-hard fan of Silo, I can confidently say that the second season is off to a gripping start! The first episode was a masterclass in suspense and intrigue, leaving us hanging on the edge of our seats.
In the second season of the show “Silo”, the initial episode has been broadcast, furthering the gripping narrative about the character Juliette, an engineer within the silo, who is unexpectedly thrust into circumstances that uncover the realities behind the apocalypse and the silo itself. Originating from a collection of novels by Hugh Howey, Juliette navigates life outside the silo, but what awaits her remains to be seen.
How long before Bernard and Robert Sims find her?
More than one silo
The season 2 opener begins with a little backstory about another silo, where it seems a revolution is occurring. Turns out at this silo the people have risen up against IT, who as we recall, secretly holds all the power in Juliette’s silo.
It appears that Russell, who is in control of the silo, has been deceiving the survivors living there. This deception leads to a violent conflict, culminating in victory for the rebellion forces.
It appears they held the conviction that the external world was secure and inhabitable, an opinion shared by multiple characters within Juliette’s silo. However, what unfolds when all the silo inhabitants break free from their confines?
As Juliette stumbles upon countless skeletons scattered throughout the barren land, we uncover the truth at the same time. The skeletal remains extend into the silo, presenting a precarious predicament for Juliette, who so far has relied on her suit to survive.
It appears no one lived through the opening of the silo; probably harmful substances and toxins from the external environment were released within. After battling to gain access, Juliette proceeds to investigate, discovering it vacant and pitch-black.
Since she’s not outside, the suit is inadvertently causing problems for her now, as she frantically tries to escape it to get fresh air. It’s crucial to note that the suit becomes a hindrance when worn, because it fails to keep contaminated air out of it, especially when individuals are required to be outside.
Juliette discovered that the source of her safety against the lethal outer atmosphere was the switchable tape on her suit. Upon removing the suit, she spotted a light and heard some sounds.
The sounds are coming from an area she cannot safely get across as the walkway had been destroyed in the rebellion. She struggles to use the rope, in an attempt to swing over but alas the rope snaps and she falls into the water.
In our memory from season 1, it’s clear that Juliette, and likely others, hadn’t learned to swim since they lived in the silos which were deep underground and had no access to any bodies of water. Despite this, she fought hard and managed to survive, albeit with a new injury.
She goes back to her present challenge, employing her exceptional problem-solving abilities to construct an improvised bridge and successfully traverse it before it collapses. On the opposite side, she discovers the lost part which then serves as a means for her return.
I step into the room, greeted by music and lights leading me to another locked door. A pair of eyes suddenly pop out from a small gap in it, making me jump. It’s a man who warns he’ll end my game if I dare open that door, leaving me hanging on the edge of danger as the scene fades away.
Juliette’s past
Throughout the episode, audiences get small glimpses into Juliette’s past and working in engineering. In season 1 she had a falling out with her father after her brother died from a sickness and her mother committed suicide soon after.
To escape her problems while utilizing her problem-solving abilities and manual dexterity, she chooses to work in the engineering sector, located at the very base of the silo that maintains the entire structure. She finds it challenging to forge friendships with a girl her age and becomes captivated by fixing an antique toy that somehow ended up in the recycling area.
She can fix it and give it to her friend who appears disinterested, suggesting that the girl didn’t have a typical childhood. Instead, she seems to view the toy as something for infants, possibly because she matured very early on in life.
On the contrary, prior to everything that transpired, Juliette was part of a thriving and affectionate family setting. However, it’s evident that she only seems to form connections with Walker, demonstrating her difficulties in navigating social interactions beyond her engineering circle, suggesting her struggles to build relationships outside of that domain.
Silo season 2 premiere review: Great season opener
This episode might seem uneventful at first glance, but upon closer examination, it unveils much more than many people initially perceive. For instance, the seemingly mundane exploration of an abandoned silo by Juliette conceals a wealth of insights.
Initially, it’s important to note that there are multiple enclosed structures, similar to Juliette’s, where the belief that the outside world is secure enough to inhabit has been adopted and served as a reason for their downfall. The inhabitants eventually turned against those in power, but upon attempting to escape, they were confronted with the harsh truth.
The world outside is deadly and uninhabitable which leads to the deaths of the entire silo. But that’s not to say that those in charge, like IT, aren’t hiding anything.
The suits were deliberately constructed to malfunction, meaning if they functioned as intended, individuals could use them for exploration beyond Earth.
They intentionally displayed images of a vibrant and attractive exterior landscape, aiming to inspire people to clean their windows. The goal was to give everyone a clear view of how safe it was beyond the windows. However, it seems that they actually wanted the windows cleaned to underscore the need for staying within the confines of the silo, serving as a constant reminder of what lies outside.
In every aspect, from the absence of elevators in specific silo sections, concealed cameras disguised as mirrors, and even determining who will conceive, it’s all geared towards maintaining control over the inhabitants. It’s clear that the silos aim to keep survivors unaware of past events.
Despite our current lack of knowledge about what initiated the apocalypse, the number of secretive silos, and the mysterious reasons behind their isolation and coordination, we can’t help but suspect that there’s something sinister at play. Could this season finally shed light on the whole truth?
