Fans of Line of Duty now have a sneak peek at Owen Teale’s new part in the detective series Death Valley. The BBC recently released a trailer for season two, revealing Teale as the estranged father of DI Janie Mallowan (played by Gwyneth Keyworth). Liz Carr, known for Silent Witness, is also joining the cast as a guest star this season.
The new trailer hints at a strained reunion between a father and daughter, with Teale’s character unexpectedly caught up in one of her murder investigations. Meanwhile, Janie’s relationship and surprising partnership with retired actor John Chapel (played by Timothy Spall) remain central to the show’s storyline.
The new season begins a few months after the last one ended. Janie has earned a promotion to detective inspector, but she’s overwhelmed with work and struggling to keep up with the ever-growing pile of paperwork.

Things get even more complicated when Janie discovers John has been dating her mother, causing her to avoid him. However, a murder within their Community Payback group changes everything. DCI Barry Clarke pressures Janie to enlist John’s help as a consultant for the police department, leaving her with no choice.
In the second series, John finds himself back in the acting world, working on the set of a large-scale Welsh fantasy TV show, when he and his partner are called in to investigate a murder. Will revisiting his old love of acting spark something he thought he’d lost?
What to Read Next
No matter if they’re solving a murder in a small seaside town, a self-sufficient community, or the intense world of rugby, John and Janie will always work to bring justice to mid-Wales.
Melanie Walters is back as Janie’s mother, Yvonne Mallowan, in the second season. She’ll be joined by Alexandria Riley, playing pathologist Helen Baxter, and Rithvik Andugula as DC Evan Chaudhry.

The show will feature several well-known guest stars, including Jim Howick (from Ghosts), Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous), Mark Lewis Jones (Baby Reindeer, Outlander), Alexandra Roach (Nightsleeper), Hammed Animashaun (Black Ops), comedian Roisin Conaty, Rhiannon Clements (Small Prophets), Asim Chaudhry (The Cleaner), Lynn Hunter, and Mike Bubbins.
Okay, so I just finished watching Death Valley, and wow! It’s filmed in Wales, which is pretty cool, and it totally smashed records when it first came out. Apparently, more people tuned in for the first episode than for any new scripted show in five years! And over the first month, each episode averaged around 4.6 million views. Seriously impressive!
In 2025, the BBC series was the most-watched comedy in Wales, beating out all other shows on any channel or streaming service.
Death Valley season 2 returns Sunday 17 May at 8.15 pm on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.
The latest issue of Living Legends, a beautiful 100-page, full-color tribute to Sir David Attenborough, is now available! You can purchase it at newsstands or online.
