Sigue Sigue Sputnik star Ray Mayhew has died at the age of 80.
In the 1980s, a popular music icon was a drummer for a new wave band that was established in 1982 by Tony James, who had previously been a bassist with Generation X.
Or more concisely:
The ’80s music legend was a drummer for the new wave band formed by ex-Generation X bassist Tony James in 1982.
The sad news of his death was shared by bandmate Martin Degville in a Facebook tribute.
He died on August 28 but no further information or cause of death was given.
‘With deep sorrow, I learned today that my dearest friend and drummer from Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Ray Mayhew, has sadly passed away.’
I hope goodness finds you, for you’ll always be in my memories, and cherished by fans who admire you deeply.

‘You were a force, a light that shone so brightly. Rest in peace, mate. Love you always.’
The band had three UK top-40 hit singles, including Love Missile F1-11 and 21st Century Boy.
The band’s style, appearance, and creative influences were influenced by a variety of electronic and glam groups including Suicide and the New York Dolls.
After leaving behind the ’80s era, the band collaborated with renowned producers such as Stock Aitken Waterman for their hit single “Success,” released in 1988.
Outside of the band Mayhew had his own group called Mayhem Deranged.
Fans were shocked to hear the sad news of his death and posted tributes online.
They wrote about X: “It’s sad to learn that Ray Mayhew, the drummer for Sigue Sigue Sputnik, has passed away. In 1986, for a short while, this band was absolutely iconic.
‘Very sad news, I saw them Lots back in the day.’,

I recently learned the unfortunate news that Ray Mayhew, who was a drummer for the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik, passed away on the 28th of August.
‘RAY MAYHEW OF SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK RIP.’,
It is with regret that we have learned of the passing of Ray Mayhew, drummer for Sigue Sigue Sputnik on August 28th, 2025. We felt compelled to verify this news, not wanting to believe it. We had always held hope for his health and even dreamed of a SSS reunion despite the odds. Our thoughts go out to the remaining band members.
The original sentence expressed regret at hearing the news of Ray Mayhew’s death and the disbelief that accompanied it, along with hopes for his well-being and the possibility of a Sigue Sigue Sputnik reunion. The paraphrase conveys the same ideas in a more natural and easy-to-read manner.)
