Sigourney Weaver, 76, addresses  ‘legitimate concerns’ over her onscreen kiss with 14-year-old Avatar co-star Jack Champion

Sigourney Weaver has responded to valid criticism regarding a kissing scene she filmed with her Avatar: The Way of Water co-star, Jack Champion, who is significantly younger than her.

The 76-year-old actress portrays the teenage character Kiri using motion capture technology, and scenes include a kiss with Spider, played by Jack. These scenes were filmed when Jack was only 14 years old, though he is now 21.

I was a little worried about that kiss scene, but Sigourney just let us all know they actually filmed it separately! It’s such a relief to hear they didn’t actually have to kiss, and it was all done with some clever filming tricks.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she explained the challenge of filming a scene with the line, “You’re perfect just as you are,” because it involved a kiss. She clarified that she wouldn’t actually kiss her young co-star, who was around 14 or 15 years old.

Jack and I agreed he’d choose someone for me to kiss, and he did. I suspect that while I wasn’t around, they chose someone suitable for Jack in return. I was worried about all of this back and forth, and it was a valid concern.

She added that she was happy the scene made it into the final cut, because she found it very believable. The connection between the two characters felt so authentic that any questions about the actors’ ages didn’t even cross her mind.

Sigourney explained that she and Jack only filmed one scene apart, and they both enjoyed how naturally different they looked together on screen.

She described filming their scenes together as a welcome break, like a mini-vacation. Being around him brought his character so much joy, and that happiness was infectious, offering her a chance to relax and enjoy the moment.

I’m much taller than him – I think I’m around 6’4″ and he’s maybe 5’8″. The height difference is really noticeable in the movie.

As a tall woman, I personally don’t mind the height difference at all – I actually love that we’re so different! It feels just right.

Jack had mentioned how comfortable he felt working with the actress from Alien, and previously told Entertainment Weekly that people had asked him if it was a challenging experience.

As a huge fan, I’ve always known Sigourney Weaver is incredible, and that really shines through even in this unique setup. We’re filming in this grey, performance-capture space, which means so much relies on what we imagine is happening. Honestly, our imaginations are the most important thing we have to bring the story to life!

Her acting style is really distinctive, but it felt effortless to work with her because she’s such a talented actress. I mostly just responded to what she was doing, so it wasn’t too difficult, and things settled into a good rhythm after a couple of days.

This follows a dispute sparked when film director James Cameron criticized Amy Poehler for a joke she made about his relationship with filmmaker Katheryn Bigelow.

The 71-year-old didn’t hold back when criticizing 54-year-old Poehler, saying her joke was unacceptable and even showed poor judgment. He made these comments despite claiming he doesn’t get easily offended.

Cameron was married to Bigelow from 1989 to 1991. Years later, in 2013, Cameron was nominated for a Golden Globe for the film Zero Dark Thirty, which contained controversial scenes of torture. Amy Poehler was co-hosting the Golden Globes with Tina Fey that year.

The comedian started their set with a joke: ‘If I had to choose someone to oversee torture, I’d pick the woman who was married to James Cameron for three years.’

Cameron recently shared his frustration with the joke in a new interview with The New York Times, almost 13 years after it was originally made.

He criticized Amy Poehler’s comment as insensitive, arguing that the event should be focused on celebrating movies and the people who make them, rather than being used for jokes at others’ expense.

‘I’m pretty thick-skinned, and happy to be the butt of a good-natured joke, but that went too far.’

The audience at the 2013 awards show burst into laughter, and many were visibly surprised.

Cameron added that the fact people laughed proves what they assume about him, despite not knowing him or his work at all.
