As a seasoned PC gamer with decades of account creation under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of annoyance when yet another game requires me to create another account just to play it. It seems like every other week, I’m adding another forgotten username and password to the growing list in my digital graveyard.
In simpler terms, the upcoming strategy game sequel on PC won’t require an application, but it may disappoint some as there’s still one aspect that could be considered a disadvantage.
As a longtime fan of the Civilization series, I eagerly await the release of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. Having played every installment since the early days of Civilization II, I can confidently say that this game will undoubtedly find its way onto my list of top strategy games in 2025. However, despite my excitement for the upcoming title, I must admit to a slight sense of disappointment upon learning that it will not use the 2K launcher on the PC version.
If you bought Civilization VI through Epic Games Store, you’ll no longer be able to use the launcher. However, if you purchased it on Steam, you don’t need a launcher at all. Just keep in mind that you’ll still need to create a 2K account to play the game on either platform, which some users might find inconvenient.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII won’t require 2K’s launcher, but one drawback remains
A common frustration for PC gamers is the requirement to establish an extra account specifically for a certain platform when playing multiplayer games from it. This issue has surfaced in Sony’s PC releases as well. For instance, Civilization VI and VII necessitate a 2K account for login, according to their Steam product descriptions.
For sure, I hate having to set up multiple gaming accounts just to play one game. It seems like every multiplayer game these days requires another account, and while setting them up doesn’t take long, it’s still a hassle to manage all those unused accounts lying around in the gaming network.
As an ardent fan, I’m excited to share that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is set to debut in the first three months of 2025 on PC, Xbox One, Series S|X, PS4, and PS5! The game will subsequently make its way onto Nintendo Switch, although we don’t have a specific release window yet. Stay tuned for more updates!
