Sibling Secrets Unveiled: Elizabeth Banks & Jessica Biel’s Deceptive Dynamic!
The Preferred Sister is a fresh suspenseful series on Prime Video, adapted from a popular 2019 novel by Alafair Burke. Like many thrillers, it starts with a murder–but this isn’t just an ordinary homicide. The deceased, Adam, was married to Chloe but had previously been in a relationship with her estranged sister Nicky. Following the murder, circumstances compel Nicky and Chloe to reunite and confront unresolved conflicts and family secrets that could shatter their relationships.
In the captivating 8-episode miniseries, I step into the shoes of Chloe and Nicky, brilliantly portrayed by none other than Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks. Jessica, a versatile actress with a rich resume, has left her mark on series like the long-running family drama “7th Heaven,” films such as “The Illusionist” and “Total Recall,” and even lent her charm to an unforgettable guest appearance on “BoJack Horseman.” On the other hand, Elizabeth Banks is a force to be reckoned with in the industry. She’s best known for her roles in blockbusters like “The Hunger Games” and “Pitch Perfect,” as well as her directorial work on films like “Cocaine Bear.” Each of these talented ladies breathes life into their characters, making this a must-watch for any discerning viewer.
Joe Deckelmeier from ScreenRant chatted with Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel about their roles in the movie, “The Better Sister”. In this conversation, they delved into exploring family ties and how they connected with characters Nicky and Chloe. Take a peek at the trailer for “The Better Sister” and continue reading to find out what these talented actresses shared during their interview.
How The Past Affects The Present In The Better Sister
“It’s Such An Integral Part Of These Performances”
In “The Better Sister,” Chloe and Nicky, despite being sisters, had such disparate childhoods that they have developed polar-opposite personalities. As Jessica Biel put it during an interview, the performances are deeply rooted in the fact that these two sisters were raised in entirely distinct environments. She went on to explain that they grew up being fed falsehoods which led them on separate life trajectories, paths they now regret. According to Biel, her character Chloe is tormented by the choices she’s made towards her sister due to their past.
As a cinephile, I find that the intricate dynamics of these characters – their motivations, conflicts, and reconciliations – are what propel the narrative forward, shedding light on why they’ve drifted apart and how they’re striving to reconnect.
Elizabeth Banks shared, “In the series, I conversate not just figuratively but literally with the past and my father’s spirit. This allowed us to delve into a topic we were keenly interested in: the powerful, enduring impact of the past on everyone.” Banks found that her personal background aided her in portraying her character authentically: “Being an older sibling with three siblings, I have a unique perspective. My brother and I had two distinct sets of parents who evolved differently as we grew up.
Jessica Biel Explains Chloe’s State Of Mind
“Compartmentalization … All The Time”
In the role of Chloe in “The Better Sister”, Biel had to depict a character who was deliberately distancing herself from her past. She explained that this aspect created a continuous mental partitioning, stating, “It feels like there’s a constant compartmentalization happening.” She found it intriguing to portray such a character – one who knows something but is hiding it, leading to lies. However, these lies are not the truth, so she had to remember what she told each person, ensuring that she had resolved all loose ends in her life, and constantly verifying that everything was as it should be according to her character’s narrative.
Elizabeth Banks Reveals Why She Related So Much To Nicky
“I Recognized Her”
From Banks’ perspective, Nicky was incredibly relatable on an emotional level. “I could identify with her,” Banks stated, further explaining, “I come from a large family of working-class individuals. Addiction and Alcoholics Anonymous has been a part of my life for a long time with my family members and friends.” She went on to discuss what she found particularly captivating about the relationship between Chloe and Nicky within this context, stating, “Nicky is manipulative, but Chloe is self-deceptive.
In his statement, Banks expressed that Nicky initially brings a great deal of deceit into the situation. However, she shows a remarkable amount of compassion towards her sister. To progress, Banks needs Nicky’s help with the dishonesty and requires kindness from her. This intriguing interplay between us is something we must navigate, as Nicky seems to be guarded and uninvolved in the true happenings. Our realities need to align, but initially, we don’t share the same perspective. I found this aspect of our performance particularly enjoyable.
