Sian Welby Opens Up About Maternity Leave Job Fears and Her Clash with TV Industry Norms

She is considered one of ITV’s most promising rising talents, and there were serious discussions about her potentially taking over from Holly Willoughby as the host of This Morning last year.

However, Sian Welby openly shared her concerns about keeping her job after giving birth in June, expressing apprehension that the broadcasting company might choose someone else as a more suitable replacement.

The presenter, who is 38 years old, recently welcomed a 8-month-old daughter named Ruby with her fiance, radio producer Jake Beckett. After taking a brief break of three months, she returned to both the set of This Morning and Capital FM’s studios.

The daytime television personality shared with The Sun that during her maternity leave, she harbored worrying thoughts about potentially being let go from her cherished job roles.

She expressed concern, “Fearing that I might be away for a month, they might choose someone else as more suitable and ultimately replace me. Such thoughts can creep into one’s mind.

As a seasoned professional in the dynamic world of television, I can confidently say that many women, including myself, harbor some apprehension when it comes to taking time off for maternity leave. After all, we’ve spent our entire careers striving to reach this point, and the thought of stepping away, even temporarily, can be daunting.

It turned out to be a span of three months, which may not seem like much to some, yet for me, it represented the longest stretch away from work that I’ve ever had. I truly relished every moment of it.

Sian’s quick ascent into a well-known TV personality was remarkable, and she confessed that fear of slowing down her advancement might have held her back from having a child earlier in her professional journey.

The host, hailing from Nottingham, asserted that the executives of This Morning and Capital FM went out of their way to ensure she felt at ease during her summer break, indicating a positive shift in the entertainment industry.

She acknowledged feeling fortunate for being part of a nurturing team during the ITV show. She shared that Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, in particular, have helped her feel exceptionally comfortable.

Sian too shared insights about her role models in the field, confessing that she had always admired both Holly and Cat Deeley, who later took over, since her younger days.

In August, the actress and her fiancé introduced their cute new family member at the This Morning studio, where she resumed her hosting duties after a quick maternity break.

Turning towards Little Ruby, Sian remarked, “It’s such a delight having you here with me today, dear. I must admit, I was rather apprehensive about leaving you, if you catch my drift.

Approximately a month after her initial absence, the presenter reunited with Jordan North and Chris Stark on their Capital FM show. Over the past few months, she’s been readjusting to the studio environment.

Her announcement about taking maternity leave follows Sian’s disclosure to listeners, explaining the genuine cause behind her banishment from the Big Brother House.

The radio host shared that, while playing around during a guest appearance, she accidentally damaged a piece of the equipment, which left the production team displeased.

Sian said the mistake happened the day before the set and since the mishap she has not been back.

Last year, the presenter informed Will Best, the host of the reality show, that “I couldn’t discuss it then – I wasn’t permitted. However, what happened was quite innocent and ended up causing me a lot of trouble. So, you might recall, many of us were invited to visit the house around this same time last year.

On the eve of the launch, I visited the site along with one of our videographers, Emi.

We searched through each cupboard and even checked the bed. We decided to add a creative touch by taking a reverse angle shot of me peering into the wardrobes.

To accomplish this task, I needed to step into the closet. As I joked, “I should snap a photo of you in here; it’ll bring a smile one day,” I moved to capture the moment. Unfortunately, as I did so, she accidentally tumbled through the rear part of the wardrobe.
