As a horror enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of body-horror films, I can’t help but feel a thrill of anticipation upon hearing about Shudder’s acquisition of Sasha Rainbow’s debut feature, “Grafted.” Having been a fan of the genre since my teenage years when I used to sneak out to watch horror flicks at the local drive-in, I can say with confidence that this film promises to be a chilling addition to Shudder’s roster.
Shudder, a leading streaming service, has recently secured the rights to show Sasha Rainbow’s debut feature film, titled “Grafted“, across North America, the UK, and Ireland. Excitingly, they plan to make it available on their platform at the start of next year. Prior to its global release, the movie will have its Spanish premiere at this weekend’s 2024 Sitges Film Festival in Spain.
As a passionate fan, I’d describe “Grafted” as a witty exploration of body horror that pushes boundaries. I have the privilege to be a part of this creative journey, having been involved in its conception alongside talented writers Mia Maramara, Hweiling Ow, and Lee Murray. The production team includes Murray Francis and Leela Menon, with Fraser Brown taking on an executive producer role.
Rainbow expressed her excitement about partnering with Shudder via a Shudder press release:
Partnering with Shudder is a dream come true—for those of us who like our dreams dark and full of twists, and there’s no better place to unleash Grafted than with the curators of terror themselves. I can’t wait for their fearless audience to sink their teeth into this one and experience Wei’s wild and bloody pursuit of perfection.
The movie primarily focuses on Wei, a timid Chinese student with a unique birthmark on her face, who relocates to New Zealand to pursue medical research studies at an elite university. Despite being self-conscious about her birthmark, things become more difficult when her fashionable cousin and their circle of friends shun her.
Tired of her current circumstances, Wei determines she wants to alter her destiny. Eager to overcome her physical imperfection, she resorts to exploring her father’s research. Using her father’s work as a foundation, she embarks on creating an innovative skin grafting technique intended to eliminate her birthmark. However, as her experiments progress in a sinister manner, Wei grows more and more disturbed, yearning intensely for the recognition she seeks.
In the main part, Joyena Sun portrays a socially awkward college student named Wei. Meanwhile, Jess Hong assumes the role of Wei’s cousin, Angela. Alongside them in the cast are Jared Turner, Eden Hart, Sepiutaruth To’a, Ginette McDonald, and Mark Mitchinson.
