Shrinking season 2 episodes 1 and 2 are full of realizations for the characters (Recap and review)
As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the opening episodes of “Shrinking” Season 2 are like leveling up in a game – you get to explore new challenges and characters while still enjoying the familiar ones. The writing is sharp as ever, the acting top-notch, and the pacing keeps you engaged from start to finish.
Prepare yourself for the return of “Shrinking” in its second season! This delightful blend of comedy and drama was a standout from 2023, and I can hardly contain my excitement now that Apple TV+ has graciously served us not one, but two episodes on the premiere day. And we’re here to summarize and analyze these episodes for you. Are you as thrilled as I am? I certainly hope so! Warning: Spoilers Ahead.
Episode 1, “Jimmying”
In the second season debut of Shrinking, there were several epiphanies woven into the plot for each character, and it seemed as though introspection was a recurring motif throughout the episode. Our protagonist, Jimmy, plays a significant role in this self-discovery process. He encounters Grace, who, following the events at the end of season 1 where she pushed her husband off a cliff due to his abusive nature, is now under scrutiny. One aspect contributing to this situation was “Jimmying,” an unconventional method Jimmy used in treating patients that we witnessed during the first season.
Despite the fact that her actions didn’t directly harm anyone, they certainly did when Grace chose to carry them out. Now, she’s behind bars, and while her husband is still alive, he’s confined to a wheelchair with little hope of ever walking again. This situation has made both Jimmy and Grace feel remorseful. Jimmy feels particularly guilty, so much so that he enlisted the help of his attorney friend Brian to defend Grace. However, Grace remains unresponsive to their attempts at reconciliation.
In the first episode of “Shrinking” season 2, it’s evident that Sean was the one who originated the term “Jimmying,” which Jimmy has embraced wholeheartedly. However, as the story unfolds, Jimmy recognizes that his actions may have unintentionally harmed Sean. It is Paul who points this out to him. By the end of the episode, it’s a mix of sweetness and sadness to see Sean no longer being Jimmy’s patient. Yet, they both understand that this move is beneficial for Jimmy, and he had to make the difficult decision to let go. Fortunately, Sean continues to reside with him, so their bond will remain strong.
Concerning Sean, he along with Liz have launched their food truck, and it appears to be thriving, which is fantastic news! On the other hand, poor Gabi finds herself in a tough spot. Unfortunately, she has developed feelings for her friend while they’ve been spending time together. However, Jimmy doesn’t reciprocate these feelings. For him, their relationship is casual. They’ve both enjoyed it, but Gabi yearns for something deeper. Now, she finds herself caught between a dilemma and difficult choices.
Paul, too, acknowledges his feelings towards his girlfriend, Dr. Julie. However, before doing so, he initially distances himself from her first. Gabi observes that they’ve been spending significant time together, which initially unsettles Paul. Yet, over time, he warms up to the idea, as it’s well-known among friends that he has a tender heart. In the end, they both express their love for each other, albeit in an unconventional manner, fitting perfectly with the nature of their unique relationship.
Alice is significantly improving, but she’s anxious about her father’s potential relapse. She’s incredibly grateful for his current state, and shares all these feelings with Paul. Their conversations are always a notable part of their interactions. A noteworthy aspect of this new season is the openness between Alice and Jimmy, in contrast to their secretive behavior from last season.
She openly discusses her emotions with him, and he comforts her by saying everything is alright. However, this peace doesn’t last long as Jimmy encounters an unexpected visitor at work – none other than Brett Goldstein, the actor who plays Ted Lasso’s character. This season, Goldstein takes on the role of the drunk driver who collided with Tia’s vehicle, leading to her accident. Upon visiting Jimmy, he becomes uncontrollable and demands departure. The episode concludes in suspense as Alice queries about Jimmy’s day, to which he responds in a manner reminiscent of his response after Tia’s demise. Oh dear!
Episode 2, “I Love Pain”
Season 2, episode 2 of Shrinking continues, finding Jimmy in a composed state as he ponders the ideal moment to disclose his recent events and the mysterious visitor at the clinic to Alice. I find this character development in both Jimmy and Alice truly commendable, as they strive for greater honesty with each other, even during difficult times. It’s incredibly touching to observe!
Although Alice is preoccupied with the upcoming drivers license photo, as she hopes to pass the test, she isn’t eager to start driving immediately. In fact, it takes time for her to gather the necessary courage for this step, as her mother’s tragic death still haunts her. It’s a heartbreaking thought that makes me want to embrace Alice.
Jimmy manages to share with Alice the incident about the inebriated driver showing up at his workplace, doing so humorously. Oh my goodness, Jimmy! Alice’s friend advises her to write a letter, whether or not she plans to send it, as a way to express her emotions and tell the intoxicated individual what she would say if he were reading it. She follows this advice, taking it one step further. Eventually, Alice learns how to drive and heads directly to the drunk driver’s home, peering at him through a window instead.
A key point from the episode is the significant argument between Gabi and Jimmy. Despite her expressing that she’s developing feelings and they should halt their activities, Jimmy appears with a pair of red underwear that she likes. It wasn’t his plan to suggest sleeping together, he intended to deliver a care package. However, wearing the underwear implies that he was prepared for more than just delivering a package.
Clearly, Gabi feels frustrated and agitated as she had expressed her feelings to him, yet he disregarded them. Unfortunately, Jimmy is causing her further pain, showing a lack of respect for her emotions. I have to side with Gabi in this instance, as Jimmy has indeed erred. One might question his decision-making skills at times, and it’s clear that he still has much to learn. Frankly, I wasn’t fond of their relationship from the start, so let’s hope this is its final chapter.
I found the initial episodes of Shrinking season 2 highly engaging! They managed to address some lingering questions from the previous season, introduce new conflicts for this round, and leave us eagerly anticipating future events. I believe these opening episodes set a solid foundation for the season. My grade for these episodes: B.
