Shrinking season 2 episode 9 slows down and that’s what we needed (Review)
As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of countless shows, I have to say that the latest episode of Shrinking season 2 on Apple TV+ was a delightful addition to the series. While it may not have been as explosive as some of its predecessors, it certainly didn’t disappoint in terms of story progression and heartwarming moments between Jimmy and Alice – my personal favorite duo.
In the recent installment of ‘Shrinking’ season 2 on Apple TV+, while it didn’t pack the same level of excitement as some earlier episodes, it skillfully advanced the plot and offered touching interactions between Jimmy and Alice, which I find particularly endearing. Here’s our take on ‘Shrinking’ season 2 episode 9, titled “Full Grown Dude Face.” SPOILER ALERT.
I’d like to discuss the most memorable aspect of the episode for me, which revolves around Alice and Jimmy. She seems to be moving towards being more sociable, trying to step out of the shadow of her grief so it doesn’t control her life completely any longer. This change could manifest in dating, as hinted by Dylan, who was affectionately referred to as “Dyl-Pickle” by Jimmy and Tia, a nickname we were introduced to in the flashback from episode 8 last week.
As a fan, I must admit, I’m still on the fence about him due to our single outing, but it’s high time I figure out if he’s worth my investment. The moment when Jimmy and Dylan first crossed paths had me in stitches! Jimmy unveiling his goofy nickname left me chuckling, and I was taken aback by his fully-grown man face. That beard, though, is quite the sight to behold, buddy! Jimmy nearly choked on a grape, but Dylan swooped in to save the day. Guess that’s one way to make a good first impression with a potential father figure. Man, that scene had me rolling!
Following Paul’s recommendation, Jimmy endeavors to grant Alice the freedom she requires. If he does so, Paul hinted, he might just be the one Alice reaches out to when she needs assistance. Remarkably, this is exactly how things unfold. Alice is struggling to cope with the fact of her mother’s approaching demise and informing others about it. Jimmy proposes making light of the situation as a way to help, and fortunately, it works for Alice at the gathering. It appears that Dylan might also be staying put.
In this significant episode, Brian and his close companion, Charlie, were on the brink of welcoming a new addition to their family – a baby. However, the mother was torn between them and another pair, and arranged meetings with each group to make her decision. Despite Brian’s jitters and awkwardness that we certainly understand, they both managed to bond with the mom. Shockingly, she opted for the other couple in the end.
I hadn’t anticipated this turn of events, yet it seems somewhat plausible, which is intriguing. It happens that you bond with someone about something, but things don’t always go as planned. However, let me be honest, I was hoping Charlie would say “just kidding.” I’m curious if it means a ‘no’ now, and maybe later in the season, there could be a twist where they end up keeping the baby after all.
Perhaps another twist could arise in the second season of “Shrinking.” We’ll just have to watch and find out. By the way, if you’re seeking advice on parenthood, look no further than Liz. She’s an expert and will provide prompt and efficient assistance!
Ultimately, the crucial development in season 2 episode 9 revolves around Gaby’s family dynamics, specifically her lack of clear boundaries. Her sister is planning to enlist in the army, which leaves Gaby responsible for their mother once more. She wishes for her mother to continue living independently, and arranges for an at-home caregiver to help her achieve that.
Despite her reservations, Gaby finds herself unable to refuse when her mother decides to move in. Consequently, it seems like she’ll be sharing living space with her mom from now on. Setting boundaries and saying no to family, particularly parents, can be tough. I can understand why Gaby might feel this way. However, if she wants to maintain her comfort, she’ll need to find a way to express her feelings.
In summary, episode 9 of season 2 in Shrinking was quite satisfying. Contrary to some episodes, it wasn’t overly dramatic but still managed to avoid feeling like a filler. It’s not necessary for something significant to happen or a shocking cliffhanger to be present for an episode to be enjoyable. After the action-packed previous episode, this one provided a much-needed breather. However, I must admit that since Sean reconciled with his father, he hasn’t had much screen time and appears somewhat sidelined. Here’s hoping that changes soon. Overall, I’m quite pleased with this episode. Episode rating: B.
