Shrinking season 2 episode 8 is our favorite so far! (Review)

As a gamer with over a decade of emotional investment in character development and story arcs, I must say that the latest episode of Shrinking season 2 has truly hit all the right notes. The growth displayed by Jimmy, Alice, and even Louis was nothing short of remarkable.

What a terrific episode from season 2 of the series, Shrinking! I wasn’t overly impressed with last week’s installment, but this one seems to be heading in a more appealing direction for us. Are you prepared to share your opinions? Here’s a review of Shrinking season 2 episode 8, titled “Last Drink,” available on Apple TV+. SPOILER ALERT:

The main focus of this episode is clearly how Jimmy is dealing with the knowledge that Alice, Brian, and Louis – the man responsible for Tia’s car accident and death – are spending time together. Jimmy’s anger is justified, but it’s significant that he listens to Brian, demonstrating a maturity that the previous Jimmy might not have shown, as he would likely dismiss or shut down anyone in such circumstances.

Jimmy requires more time, which is reasonable. What’s truly admirable and touching is that despite his feelings for Alice not being entirely positive, he doesn’t retreat from her as he did before. This juxtaposes beautifully with the poignant scenes showing some of the sorrowful moments after Tia’s passing. Alice asks her father for support, to which he replies he can’t provide it. He avoids doing so again and is mindful of that, recalling the incident.

Even at the end of the episode, it’s still eating away at him how he treated Alice during that time. And he’s working on trying to forgive himself. That’s why he was so mad at Louis. It was an easy outlet for him to throw his anger at. And, look. Even if his life is sad Alice and Jimmy have a right to be mad at him. Though as Paul helps Jimmy realize, it’s really himself he’s angry at. And he chooses to forgive Louis too. Though he asks him to stay away from his daughter, his friends, and his life.

Jimmy’s reaction seems entirely understandable. However, it highlights that he has room for further personal growth. Progress comes gradually, as we’ve seen with the touching flashbacks involving Tia and the encounter between Alice and Liz. As for Liz, she and Derek are navigating the aftermath of her kiss with Mac, a situation that requires time to resolve. Similarly, Derek is dealing with his feelings and needs some time to process them as well.

During the episode, it becomes clear to him that Liz was attempting to express feelings of being overwhelmed, but he dismissed them unintentionally due to her resilience and ability to handle such emotions on her own. However, everyone has vulnerabilities, even the strongest among us require emotional assistance at times. He recognizes this and decides to forgive her. While he had the option not to, it was touching that he gathered their three sons for a family dinner as well.

I appreciate how the writer skillfully incorporated Louis’ background story about the circumstances leading to the accident into this narrative. He wasn’t reckless or a habitual drunk driver; he simply made a regrettable decision. Given that his home was nearby, he thought it was safe to drive despite his girlfriend suggesting they call a ride service. This serves as a reminder that even small amounts of alcohol can impair your judgment and driving ability, so always err on the side of caution.

It’s evident that he acknowledges his guilt for a significant error, one which could have been prevented. I can’t tell if it’s his words or the reminder of his decision each time he looks at his girlfriend that makes him recall his choice, or if he’s inflicting self-punishment. Regardless, Louis ends their relationship despite her intent to stand by him.

In my opinion, Season 2, Episode 8 of Shrinking really nailed some powerful emotional moments, offered additional character background that enlightens us about the characters, and delivered significant character growth. Despite Paul’s sleep issues, he made a wise decision to visit the doctor rather than brush it off. Interestingly, Sean ended up accompanying him to the appointment, which led to a more open and exposed side of Paul that was refreshing to witness. This episode has been my favorite so far this season. Episode rating: A
