Shrinking season 2 episode 7 gives us a storyline that feels rushed (Review)

As a gamer who has seen his fair share of twists and turns in RPGs, I must say that this week’s episode of Shrinking was reminiscent of a well-crafted side quest. The focus on Brian and Liz’s storylines was engaging, and the cliffhanger left me eagerly anticipating the next episode.

This week’s installment of “Shrinking” season 2 offered compelling story arcs for each character, with particular emphasis on Brian and Liz’s narrative threads. As expected, the episode ended on a suspenseful note, keeping viewers hooked as ever! Here is our review of season 2 episode 7 titled “Get in the Sea,” now streaming on Apple TV+. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.

Initially, I assumed that Sean would be the patient assisted in this episode, given the synopsis. However, it turned out to be Dan instead, a character we recognize. Jimmy returns to his usual antics, and while this particular patient required a bit more prodding and patience, progress was made thanks to Jimmy’s unorthodox approach. It was heartwarming to witness such development.

Dan played a significant role in helping Brian and Charlie understand that they weren’t quite ready for parenthood yet. They had been informed that a mother had chosen them, and the opportunity to become parents could come as early as the next day. However, transitioning from months of preparation to just one day is a massive jump. It became clear to both of them that if Brian had asked Charlie for his thoughts, he would have realized they shared the same fear. Consequently, the couple decided to postpone their parenthood plans.

One key takeaway from the episode for me was how significant it was that everyone joined Brian in the ocean to aid him in dealing with his feelings. Sometimes we become so engrossed in our own thoughts that we overlook checking on someone else’s emotions. Surprisingly, they might be experiencing similar feelings. Emphasis on communication is crucial here – it truly boils down to sharing and understanding feelings.

Another way to phrase that could be: A significant aspect of the episode revolves around Liz and Mac spending time together and eventually sharing a kiss. Oh dear! I can see why Liz might respond in kind and deal with her emotions as portrayed. However, I find the plot development between them lacked depth. Granted, we witness Liz losing direction regarding the food truck. But if she’s struggling emotionally over Conner, this situation could have been developed more extensively.

I’m not saying Liz isn’t a good mom, she clearly is. But I think she can learn to communicate and listen to her kids more. Even if it does seem like they’re being whiny. She’s really just thinking about herself and not about how she may have hurt Conner’s feelings. I don’t know. I feel like fleshing that out, on top of everything else, would have made this kiss more believable. It just felt like a plot device we all saw coming and that’s been done so many times.

In each new episode of Shrinking season 2, Alice is clearly growing up. She reconciles with Summer following a tune Summer made that called out Alice. Moreover, Alice comes to understand that she and Brian should no longer keep their meetings with Louis a secret. Conveniently, Jimmy witnesses this encounter from a restaurant window just as he and Alice make eye contact. The episode then concludes on this dramatic note.

I’m glad they’re not keeping this a secret for very long. The characters are going to have to deal with it now. And it’s going to be interesting to see how Jimmy will react. He’s also made so much progress in this grief that he’s been in. Hopefully this won’t set him back. Overall I though season 2 episode 7 was good, though the Liz storyline is not my favorite right now. Also, I’m definitely crushing on Derek2 just like everyone else! Episode grade level: B.
