Shrek 5: The Countdown Begins

Today, Shrek remains the foremost iconic ogre in popular culture, more than a quarter-century into the Shrek franchise and six films later. The initial Shrek film, released in 2001, revolutionized animation by fostering the industry’s transition from traditional 2D to computer animation. With four Shrek movies and two Puss in Boots spinoffs under its belt, the franchise has collectively earned over $1.6 billion, cementing its place as one of the most prosperous animated franchises ever created.

Currently, it’s planned for “Shrek 5” to hit theaters towards the end of 2026, marking the franchise’s expansion to seven main movies. Details about the storyline are scarce at this point, but DreamWorks Animation, Universal Pictures, and key personnel associated with the production have given some hints regarding the project in progress. The first official glimpses of “Shrek 5” have ignited discussion among fans due to a noticeable shift in the animation technique. Additionally, it’s been announced that Zendaya will be part of the main cast as a mature Felicia, joining the original cast members.

The Shrek 5 Cast Is Officially Announced

Zendaya Has Been Added to the Original Core Cast

On February 27, 2025, Universal Pictures officially unveiled the , as evidenced by a teaser trailer posted on YouTube. The video initiates with Shrek and Donkey employing the Magic Mirror to browse through pictures of Shrek, similar to a social media feed. Subsequently, Fiona and one of Shrek and Fiona’s triplets, who is presumably a teenager now named Felicia, join them.

As a movie enthusiast, I eagerly watched the intriguing teaser for the upcoming Shrek sequel. The big reveal at the end was nothing short of thrilling! Mike Myers returns as our beloved ogre, Shrek, alongside Eddie Murphy as his wisecracking donkey companion. And who could forget Cameron Diaz as the beautiful Fiona?

But Although the announcement was vague about other returning characters, it’s clear that Cody Cameron will reprise his hilarious role as Pinocchio and Chris Miller will be back as the Magic Mirror. Both characters make a notable appearance in the teaser, hinting at their return to the Shrek universe. I can hardly wait to see these familiar faces bring laughter and magic once again!

A New Legacy and Meechee in the 2018 film Smallfoot. In these films, she played one of the triplets (Farkle, Fergus, or Felicia) who were initially introduced as babies in Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After. The anticipation is high among fans to learn about the family dynamics involving Shrek, given that at least one teenager appears to be living with him (although it’s uncertain if the other two siblings are part of the story). However, some aspects of the brief teaser have sparked debate among fans, such as perceived changes in character designs.

Approximately a month and a half after the teaser was posted, it has garnered over 14 million views on YouTube as of April 2025. The description simply says “Get ready for Far Far Away’s Best!” It also adjusted the release date, pushing back the initially planned date by six months, with the movie set to hit theaters on Christmas 2026. Interestingly enough, this will mark the first time a Shrek film is not released in the month of May.

The Redesign of Shrek Characters Is Divisive

They Look Different, and That Is Okay

In a different style compared to traditional Shrek films, the teaser animation deviates in several aspects, leading to an online debate. Some believe this change is comparable to the level of backlash experienced previously. Notably, there have been adjustments to all recurring characters: Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Pinocchio now exhibit a more exaggerated, less lifelike appearance than before.

One aspect that many fans find displeasing about these updates is their alteration of the nostalgic image they have of Shrek. With advancements in 3D computer animation over the past fifteen years, Shrek Forever After was released in 2010. The improved coloring, lighting, and shading might appear drastic to an untrained observer due to their impact on the overall picture. Interestingly, there were no complaints about how significantly different the animation appeared in Puss in Boots (released in 2022) compared to its 2011 version. Essentially, modernizing the animation style necessitates some adjustments to the design, at a minimum.

Setting aside the debate about the evolution of computer animation, and acknowledging these characters are animated, it can also be argued that changes in design might reflect the creators honoring the fifteen-year gap since the last Shrek movie. If Felicia transformed from a baby to a teenage girl, wouldn’t her parents realistically look different from how they appeared in the previous installment? This logic applies to Donkey as well, given that he also ages. Since Pinocchio and the Magic Mirror are magical entities, it’s theoretically possible for them to undergo magical transformations too.

One argument for its defense is that Shrek 5 might appear subpar with current visual effects standards if it retained the original animation style. Fans should bear in mind that the footage shown in this teaser may not be from the actual movie at all. Universal Pictures likely moved up the release date announcement and revealed Zendaya’s casting to counteract recent rumors about her hiring, so the teaser was probably hastily produced to beat those leaks. Shrek 5 is still under development, and DreamWorks Animation has a reputation for high-quality work, suggesting that they are likely taking criticisms into account and have plenty of time left to make adjustments if necessary.

Shrek 5 Has Been in Development for a Long Time

​​​​It Is Probably Not the Franchise’s Last

It’s not entirely unexpected that a fifth Shrek movie is in the works, given that DreamWorks had discussed making five Shrek films following the success of the first sequel. In fact, DreamWorks’ CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg envisioned a five-film arc for the franchise as early as 2004, after the release of Shrek 2. What’s surprising is that we’re finally seeing Shrek 5 come to fruition; the project has been in development since 2007, following the release of Shrek the Third.

Back when DreamWorks was working on Shrek 4 (Shrek Forever After), it felt like the end of the road for Shrek 5. The title itself hinted at the final chapter, but lo and behold, my dear cinema enthusiasts, our creative producer Bill Damaschke confirmed our fears. Then, in 2009, scriptwriter Josh Klausner pulled back the curtain on the behind-the-scenes drama, revealing the unexpected turn of events that eventually led to the resurrection of Shrek’s cinematic journey.

Initially, when I joined this project, it wasn’t intended to be the last installment – there were plans for five Shrek films. However, approximately a year into the creative process, Jeffrey Katzenberg determined that the tale we had crafted was the ideal conclusion for Shrek’s adventure, which was quite an honorable compliment.

The final Shrek film, titled Shrek Forever After, was considered the last one from 2009 until 2016 when NBCUniversal bought DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion in June 2016. Steve Burke, former executive director of NBCUniversal, then decided to revive the franchise. In September 2016, it was announced that a new Shrek film could potentially release between 2019 and 2020, with Eddie Murphy being the first cast member to confirm his own involvement. Furthermore, Murphy hinted at a future Donkey movie in an interview in 2023, stating “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie.” However, as of now, DreamWorks has not officially confirmed a Donkey spinoff.

Scriptwriter Michael McCullers has been penning the script for Shrek 5 since 2017, stating that the fifth installment represents a significant overhaul of the series. Walt Dohrn, who was previously involved as a writer and artist in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, as well as voicing Rumpelstiltskin in Shrek Forever After, will direct the film. This marks Dohrn’s third directorial endeavor for DreamWorks, following Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together. The lengthy development process of Shrek 5 may be due to factors like the 2020 pandemic and the 2023 Hollywood strikes potentially disrupting production.

The Shrek 5 Release Is Scheduled for December 2026

It Is Coming 25 Years After Shrek

The fifth installment of Shrek, Shrek 5, is slated for a theatrical release in the United States on December 23, 2026. Remarkably, this date was chosen to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original Shrek film and to steer clear of competition with another successful animated movie series that will also be released in 2026. In other words, fans will have to wait approximately a year and a half before they can enjoy Shrek 5 on the big screen.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the release date for “Shrek 5” has been pushed back from July 1, 2026, to Christmas 2026. Universal Pictures initially announced in July 2024 that we could expect this long-awaited sequel on our screens. However, a six-month delay, announced in February 2025, seems to be in the works due to Universal’s strategic decision to release “Minions 3” during the Summer of 2026 instead. It’s fascinating to note that while both films are distributed by Universal Pictures, “Shrek 5” is being produced independently, whereas the “Minions” franchise is the brainchild of Illumination Entertainment.

Shrek 5, part of Universal’s multi-year agreement with Netflix, has a prearranged distribution plan for both Netflix and Peacock. The precise release date is yet to be determined, but here’s how the film will be distributed: For the initial four months, it will exclusively stream on Peacock. After that, it will be available only on Netflix for the next ten months. In the final stretch of 18 months, it will return to Peacock. It remains uncertain whether this 18-month streaming window will follow its theater run or commence with its Christmas Day premiere on December 23, 2026.

The first showing of the Christmas special, coinciding with the 25th anniversary celebration of the series, promises to make this launch a significant cinematic milestone. As it stands, the franchise has the potential to draw in both young and older audiences who carry fond memories of the past. However, it won’t be going head-to-head with Minions 3 in Universal Pictures’ release schedule, but will instead debut alongside another renowned animated franchise that started around the same time – produced and distributed by 20th Century Studios. Interestingly, this other franchise, known as Shrek, is set to be released a few days before Shrek 5. Notably, with this fifth film, Shrek will join the ranks of only three computer-animated film franchises globally that have reached a pentalogy, following in the footsteps of Ice Age and Toy Story.
