‘Shrek 5’ set for July 2026 release; Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz to return

As a longtime fan of animated movies, I was absolutely thrilled to hear that DreamWorks Animation is bringing back our beloved ogre friend, Shrek, for a fifth installment! The first “Shrek” film holds a special place in my heart – it was one of those movies that instantly became a classic when it hit the screens back in 2001. I remember watching it with my family during its premiere and being captivated by its unique blend of humor, heartfelt storytelling, and stunning animation.

Shrek is coming back to the big screen — really, really.

On Tuesday, DreamWorks Animation revealed plans for a new “Shrek” movie, set to hit cinemas the following summer. This timely release will mark the 25th anniversary since the debut of the original “Shrek” film.

“The long-awaited Shrek 5 is just around the corner, hitting theaters on July 1, 2026! The voices behind our beloved characters – Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona – will be returning to bring us more magic and merriment.”

As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be looking forward to “Shrek 5,” a new addition to the beloved franchise. This upcoming film will be helmed by Walt Dohrn, who previously contributed as a writer and artist in “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” and served as head of story in “Shrek Forever After.” According to Variety’s latest report, Gina Shay from “Trolls” production team and Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, will co-produce this project. Additionally, Brad Ableson will join Walt Dohrn as a co-director. Although plot details remain under wraps for now, I can’t wait to see what magical tales await us in “Shrek 5.”

The original “Shrek” movie, released in 2001, is adapted from William Steig’s 1990 picture book of the same title and follows the journey of an ogre who decides to explore the world beyond his swampy childhood home. This hugely popular animated comedy was the first to win an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and generated over $484 million in global box office revenue, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

I’m a fan of the Shrek franchise and was thrilled when two Puss in Boots spinoffs were released. These movies came out after the main series and brought in over $12 million domestically during their December 2022 opening, which accounted for approximately 6.7% of their overall earnings. The most recent installment even earned an Oscar nomination in the animated feature category. However, there’s no official confirmation yet from DreamWorks about whether Antonio Banderas, who brings Puss in Boots to life with his voice, will reprise his role for Shrek 5.

In a June conversation with Collider, I shared some exciting news about a potential fifth “Shrek” movie. The ball got rolling on this project around four to five months prior to our chat.

As a passionate cinemagoer, I’ve captured the initial act of our production this year. We’ll complete the remaining parts and bring it to life in due time. Oh, and by the way, there’s a possibility of creating a standalone film focusing on my character, Donkey.

After DreamWorks declared the news on a Taylor day, countless Shrek fans expressed their enthusiasm on social media platforms.

The user replied to DreamWorks’ announcement: “I’m currently seated in the theater, but the employees are frightened and asking me to depart because it’s not July 1, 2026 yet. However, I’m finding it hard to move from my spot.”

“it’s always darkest (2024 elections) before the dawn (Shrek 5 in 2026),” another wrote.
