Shrek 5 release date delayed to December 2026
Shrek 5 has had its release date pushed back to December 2026, it has been confirmed.
According to Variety, it was Universal Pictures, the studio behind DreamWorks Animation and Illumination, who announced a shift in the release date of the fifth installment featuring our grumpy ogre and his enchanting companions. The new date set for this adventure is now December 23, as opposed to July 1 initially planned.
Currently, the release date for “Minions 3” has been brought forward from its original date of June 30, 2027. It will now occupy the position previously reserved for “Shrek 5”. This is a full year ahead of the initial announcement.
The unnamed Illumination project, initially planned for March 19, has been rescheduled to take over the June 30, 2027 slot. This change allows the studio to have a blockbuster animated movie for the summer season.
It has also been confirmed that Shrek 5 has gained a second director.
Initially, Walt Dohrn, who’s worked in the story department for earlier Shrek films and gave voice to Rumpelstiltskin, was set to direct alone. However, Conrad Vernon, a co-director from Shrek 2 and the voice actor behind The Gingerbread Man, has recently joined him as a director as well.
While details about the storyline for Shrek 5 remain scant, the finale of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish showed Puss, alongside Kitty Softpaws and Perrito, embarking on a journey to the land of Far Far Away.
In a return to their popular roles, Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will reprise as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, respectively. Additionally, Murphy has hinted at plans for a standalone Donkey spin-off project.
To date, the four Shrek movies collectively raked in approximately $2.9 billion globally at the box office, whereas the two Puss in Boots films earned roughly an additional $1 billion.
Additionally, there have been numerous stage performances, video games, television series, and various other merchandise launched throughout the years as well.
Shrek 5 will be released on December 23, 2026.
