Showtime renews Yellowjackets for season 4: Which character relationships need more screen time?
Following a remarkable third season, Showtime has chosen to extend the popular series “Yellowjackets” into a fourth season. The season finale, titled “Full Circle,” offered an alternate viewpoint of the pilot’s wilderness introduction sequence and also revealed that Natalie had secretly departed from the group in a daring attempt to contact someone from the outside world. This is the first indication of a successful rescue mission since the collapse of the prospective homecoming team led by the frog scientist group. However, with the Yellowjackets having several months left in the wilderness, and the possibility of an ongoing power struggle between Shauna and Natalie once Natalie rejoins the group, there is no shortage of intrigue as to what season four may hold, and whether rescue might finally be on its way.
Both storylines have many unanswered questions and unexplored character relationships that could be further developed. While definitive answers might not come until a possible fifth season, the current fourth season can establish the foundations for these relationships to make sense later on. This includes exploring why some strong bonds frayed or how lesser-known connections became crucial to the series. The third season has already begun delving into character dynamics, such as providing a backstory for Misty’s loyalty towards Natalie and setting up the complexities in their relationship with Shauna.
In the third season, Natalie and Shauna’s relationship stands out as a captivating one, frequently depicting them in conflict, representing contrasting perspectives on survival – whether it involves maintaining or abandoning our humanity. They also embody distinct leadership approaches and offer starkly different responses to the harsh environment they inhabit, serving as significant figures within the Yellowjackets. Their relationship may evolve further in season four, given that their adult selves appear to harbor a mutual animosity but not outright hatred. The upcoming season offers ample opportunities to explore how their teenage dynamics have evolved into complex adult relationships.
For instance, Natalie and Travis, during seasons one and two, frequently interacted but barely crossed paths in season three. This allowed them both to engage with other characters, yet hints from the adult timeline suggest that their relationship could become unhealthy as they lean on each other, on and off, after their rescue. Although this dynamic may not manifest in season four, further developing their bond could reinforce why their adult relationship is so troubled. Their connection to Javi’s death and its associated events is well-established, but it remains uncertain if anything else contributes to their inability to stay apart or together for extended periods.
As a devoted movie aficionado, I find the relationship between Taissa and Natalie in adulthood intriguing, but it’s a connection that the Wilderness timeline hasn’t fully fleshed out yet. While they do share some moments together, these interactions don’t quite provide a clear answer as to why Taissa feels compelled to cover Natalie’s multiple rehab stays financially. Could it be Natalie’s success in reaching the outside world that draws Taissa closer to her? There are numerous factors that could explain Taissa’s feelings of obligation towards Natalie, and season four seems poised to offer more insights into their complex bond.
In the first season, the adult dynamics between Natalie, Taissa, and Shauna were central, with Misty’s connections taking a back seat. At what point did Shauna, Taissa, and Natalie transform into their own version of a trio? Although season four might be premature to delve deeply into how these three revolve around each other, it could lay the groundwork for understanding how Shauna and Natalie became the main threads connecting Taissa to her Wilderness experience. It also hints at how characters like Shauna, Van, Misty, Lottie, Travis, Melissa, and any unseen survivors may have drifted apart.
In the narrative we follow, it appears that Van and Taissa’s bond, which was solid during our time in the wilderness, eventually faces challenges post-rescue. The exact moment things take a turn for the worse isn’t entirely clear. Van mentions that it was Taissa who ended their relationship, but I wonder if this decision sprung up unexpectedly or if signs of trouble had been brewing while we were still lost in the wilderness, or perhaps not until after our rescue.
In the timeline of our wilderness survival, Van and Taissa’s relationship was a beacon of strength and consistency. However, my choice to assist Natalie and Misty in repairing the radio and making contact with the outside world might have been the first fissure in Van and Taissa’s bond, as Taissa had advocated for staying put in the wilderness.
In season four, we might delve deeper into Van’s relationships with Natalie and Misty, as her interactions primarily revolve around Taissa at the moment. The fourth season could provide a chance to flesh out the bonds that were forged between Van and these two women, who she initially allied with. While Shauna and Van didn’t develop a close relationship, it doesn’t necessarily mean that Van did not foster other connections.
Van’s encounter with Lottie in the adult timeline of season two hints at a powerful bond between them, despite their lack of exploration as adults. Unfortunately, both characters met tragic ends in season three, but their reunion suggests that their connection remained strong.
A significant and gradually unfolding bond, heavily emphasized in Season 2, exists between Lottie and Natalie. The second season delved into their history as teenagers and adults, portraying an intriguing dynamic where Natalie distanced herself from the Wilderness faith that Lottie had established. Simultaneously, Lottie’s actions indicated her persistent efforts to protect Natalie. In Season 3, their relationship takes a back seat, with individual moments rather than overarching emotional narratives being highlighted. Nevertheless, these brief instances carry significant weight, such as when Lottie intervenes to shield Natalie after she killed Coach Scott, effectively handing group control to Shauna in an attempt to save her life. However, the second season hints at a more profound and intricate bond between Natalie and Lottie than what is portrayed in Season 3.
Season four provides an explanation for Van’s statement about Melissa and Gen becoming close to Hannah, along with depicting Hannah giving the tape to Melissa to give to Alex. The relationship between Shauna and Melissa in the wilderness might be strained due to Melissa’s lingering hurt from Shauna’s actions and taking her side, but it remains unclear if she can truly harm Shauna. This tension could potentially fuel Shauna’s reign of terror in their adult lives. It is unknown where Shauna’s allegiances lie following Van’s death, as she is unaware that Taissa and Misty have begun plotting against her. Shauna may view power as her only reliable ally, a dynamic she has strived for in the wilderness but only recently started considering again at the end of season three. The show has always portrayed Shauna as dangerous in the adult timeline, but her relationship with power is still evolving. Season four offers numerous possibilities for plot development and exploring the complex relationships between the Yellowjackets, providing insights into their shared trauma history and bond.
