Showrunner behind HBO's new Harry Potter series wants to stick close to the source text

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan who has grown up with these magical tales, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about HBO’s upcoming TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books. The movies are my comfort blanket, and the books remain my go-to when I need to escape reality. However, recent events have complicated things, but let’s focus on the magic for now.

At present, HBO is diligently developing a TV show inspired by J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, and there’s quite a buzz about it. It’s one of the most acclaimed stories from the last few decades, with the Harry Potter movies being timeless classics and the books continuing to captivate readers. However, recent years have seen some controversy surrounding Rowling due to her expressed transphobic opinions.

Nonetheless, the upcoming TV series promises to be quite significant. The show’s creator, Francesca Gardiner, along with her team, are currently on the hunt for talented individuals to portray characters such as Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dumbledore. HBO is targeting a 2027 premiere for this production.

According to Deadline, Gardiner – known for her work on shows like Killing Eve, Succession, and His Dark Materials – has been profiled. Although not widely recognized as a household name, her impressive resume stands out; her contributions to His Dark Materials, an adaptation of a popular series of young adult fantasy novels, are particularly notable, given that she wrote some of the most acclaimed episodes herself.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled about the latest updates on Deadline, which hints at the formation of the Harry Potter writers’ room. Joining J.K. Rowling’s right-hand, Steve Kloves, will be Laura Neal from Killing Eve, Andy Greenwald of Briar Patch, and Josephine Gardiner, Francesca’s sister. Although Josephine lacks a significant screenwriting credit, she has worked with the franchise on an original feature film development.

The intriguing aspect of the Deadline profile might lie in the comments made by Killing Eve producer Sally Woodward Gentle regarding Francesca Gardiner’s plans for the series. She suggested that Francesca aims to stay true to the books and is unlikely to make drastic changes or stir up controversy.

Essentially, those who have collaborated with Gardiner suggest she plans to remain loyal to the original content instead of creating something unique from it. This approach seems necessary for well-known books such as the Harry Potter series. The intrigue lies in whether a fresh TV adaptation will distinguish itself enough from the Harry Potter films, given they were quite faithful to the novels. A TV series could certainly include elements missing from the movies, but will that be sufficient? We’ll discover the answer in 2027.
