With so many new shows being released, it’s natural to wonder if they are worth investing your time in. Today, we’re discussing an adaptation of a novel on Netflix.

Series: The Perfect Couple

Where to Find It: All six episodes are now streaming on Netflix.

My Perspective: I’m excitedly diving into this fresh series, inspired by Erin Hilderbrand’s novel. It unfolds against the picturesque backdrop of Nantucket, where a grand wedding is taking place among a prosperous family during the Fourth of July weekend. The groom, Benji (played by Billy Howle), is tying the knot with Amelia (Eve Hewson). However, amidst the festivities and joy, there seems to be an undercurrent of tension within the couple and their family that promises to make this more than just a simple wedding story.

Benji’s mom, Greer (played by Nicole Kidman), is a well-known author. She’s strong-willed and can come off as distant, and she doesn’t particularly like Amelia. Despite Benji trying to keep the peace, things between them stay frosty. However, Amelia has her parents and her closest friend Merritt (Meghan Fahy), who is serving as her Maid of Honor. Tragically, Merritt turns up dead on the beach on the morning of the wedding, adding a sinister turn to the events.

Investigators start examining the clues that suggest a possible homicide. The police chief, Michael Beach, approaches the affluent family with caution, while lead detective Donna Lynn Champlin presses for explanations. As we delve into a sequence of conversations, we uncover events from the day before the murder, during which everyone seems to be concealing something.

One Man’s Opinion of The Perfect Couple

Translating a large novel into a screenplay offers immense possibilities. It allows for crafting an engaging narrative with a richly layered ensemble within a compact format. This is exactly what you find in the latest Netflix series, designed for binge-watching.

This is an impressive cast. In addition to Kidman, Howle, and Hewson, the series features Liev Schreiber, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning, among others. All of them play their parts well, and there are plenty of characters and plots to explore as we dive into this story. I like the setting as well, a cloistered community where this wealthy family is used to having carte blanche.

I’m also fond of the structure and duration of the series – it consists of just six episodes, ranging from 42 minutes to an hour each. This means you can easily watch it in one go without investing too much time. The first two episodes effectively introduce the world, develop the plotlines, and leave a tantalizing cliffhanger that encourages you to continue following the story. It’s another engaging option for streaming services.
