Should You Try It: The Agency on Showtime and Paramount Plus

As a seasoned television enthusiast with a penchant for espionage dramas and a soft spot for Michael Fassbender’s riveting performances, I found myself drawn to Paramount+’s new offering, “The Agency.” With a rich cast that includes Jodie Turner-Smith, Jeffrey Wright, and the legendary Richard Gere, this series promises to deliver an engaging and suspenseful tale.

Hello December! As the year approaches its end, the choices for fresh TV shows may seem to dwindle along with it. But don’t worry, this is a busy season and you might have other commitments that require careful consideration when choosing new shows to watch. That’s where we come in, providing you with all the necessary details to make an educated viewing decision. Today, we’re discussing a remake of a popular French series.

Series: The Agency

Location of Streaming: You can currently watch the first two episodes on Paramount+. New episodes will be available every Friday on Paramount+, while re-airs occur on Sunday evenings on Showtime.

Title Synopsis: This show is based on the French series “Le Bureau des Legendes,” which was on air from 2015 to 2020. It revolves around the world of spies, with this new version zeroing in on a CIA division situated in London. The main cast includes Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith, Jeffrey Wright, and Richard Gere.

Our focus is on the character portrayed by Fassbender, who’s back at work after six years undercover in Africa. During his time there, he developed a bond with Dr. Sami Zahir, played by Turner-Smith, leading to a romantic involvement. However, Martian’s sudden exit leaves him struggling to bid farewell. She does too, but is she everything she seems?

In London, the Martian finds himself swiftly entangled in a tricky predicament, with his role as a covert agent in Russia becoming more complex when another undercover operative mysteriously vanishes. There’s concern that he might have defected, potentially compromising several ongoing operations. Will they be able to unravel this mystery before it’s too late?

Consider Giving It a Shot If:

One Man’s Opinion of The Agency

This ten-episode sequence will unfold throughout the remainder of this year and carry over into January. To pique your curiosity, we released the first two episodes together this weekend. The series has a compelling cast that promises to captivate you. In terms of quality, both the acting and world creation are commendable.

I love Fassbender as a lead. His work in The Killer last year was some of my favorite on film. He’s compelling here, too, but the early episodes are playing with the timeline and teasing things out at what feels like a glacial pace. I didn’t see the original series, so I don’t know where this is going. That makes this a bit of a slow watch at the beginning, especially compared to some of the more action-oriented spy series we have on the air currently.

This material is intriguing enough for me to wonder how it unfolds. I appreciate the cast and the initial concept. The second episode also presents the action in a captivating manner, enhancing the suspense and making it harder to look away. If you’re hesitant after the first episode, I suggest giving the second one a try.
