Should You Try It: Sweetpea on Starz

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for dark and gripping narratives, I must say that Sweetpea has caught my attention like a moth to a flame. Having played countless games where I’ve had to make tough moral choices, Sweetpea resonates with me on a deep level.

As October arrives, it’s no surprise that we’re diving into Spooky Season! This extends not just to the atmosphere, but also to new TV shows premiering this month. But with so many options, which ones are worth your time? Let us guide you by providing all the necessary details to help you decide if a show suits your preferences. Today, we’re focusing on a chilling series that’s set to premiere on Starz.

Series: Sweetpea

Where to Find It: The pilot is now streaming on Starz, with subsequent episodes dropping Thursdays.

What’s the Series About: This TV show is based on the book of the same title by CJ Skuse. It was jointly developed by Sky Atlantic and had simultaneous premieres in the U.K. and America, on Starz. The lead role, portrayed by Ella Purnell, depicts a woman who’s experiencing tough times.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, I’m feeling quite frustrated and aggravated lately. It seems like there are countless NPCs (non-player characters, for those not familiar with gaming lingo) who give me a hard time in real life. From the jerks on public transport, to the unsupportive colleagues at work, and even the bullies from high school, it feels like they’re all part of an endless level I can’t seem to beat.

As she’s continually driven closer and closer to a critical limit, Rhiannon feels compelled to reevaluate her life. In an effort to heed her father’s counsel and become more self-assured, she embarks on a path that unexpectedly veers into a rather grim direction.

You Should Try It If: You’re a fan of mini-series, a fan of darker stories, or a fan of Purnell.

One Man’s Opinion of Sweetpea

It’s possible that many of us have experienced feelings of intense anger towards someone who has wronged us. But what if these angry feelings persist and accumulate? What if they’re compounded by a series of setbacks that make us feel powerless, isolated, and enraged? In such cases, we might find ourselves resembling the character Rhiannon to some extent.

In this show, the main character isn’t exactly a saint, but we grow to empathize with Rhiannon, who is constantly mistreated by those around her. As the pilot progresses, Rhiannon reaches her breaking point and eventually snaps. The pilot ends here, setting up the rest of the series.

As a fan, this new series seems to have a unique feminine spin on the Dexter-like theme. It’s still unclear if it will delve as deeply into dark territories as its predecessor. However, Purnell’s performance is mesmerizing and keeps you hooked throughout the pilot. The show consists of just six episodes, making for a manageable commitment for viewers. I’m intrigued to follow its progression, and the pilot has done an impressive job of establishing the world in a way that leaves me eager to see more.
