Should You Try It: Rivals on Hulu and Disney Plus
As a lifelong enthusiast of period dramas and someone who’s navigated more than a few high society social circles, I must say that “Rivals” is a riveting addition to the genre. The 80s setting, with its bold fashion and even bolder attitudes, offers a refreshing twist on the usual costume drama.
In today’s age, there’s no shortage of content vying for your attention across multiple channels and streaming platforms. It can be overwhelming deciding what’s worth watching. Allow us to assist you, as this guide offers all the essential details to make a wise viewing choice. Today, we’re discussing an adaptation of a provocative ’80s novel.
Series: Rivals
Where to Find It: All eight episodes are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+
Title Synopsis: The recently premiered series is based on the 1988 novel by Jilly Cooper, and like the book, it’s set in the vibrant decade of the 1980s. The story unfolds in the fictional English county of Rutshire, revolving around the intricate lives and social dynamics of the upper class. At its core is Lord Tony Baddingham (portrayed by David Tennant), who strives to establish a notable presence in the TV industry.
To create the maximum impact, Baddingham aims to attract top-tier talent. Initially, he targets a renowned interviewer, Declan O’Hara (Aidan Turner), who feels constrained by the BBC. Seizing this opportunity for greater creative freedom, Declan expresses immediate interest. Furthermore, Baddingham secures the services of a dynamic American producer, Cameron Cook (Nfessa Williams). Upon joining, Cameron aspires to inject fresh ideas and give the network an edge that will make it more appealing to viewers.
To preserve a positive reputation, it’s recommended that Baddingham invites influential figures onto the board. Specifically, he’s faced with the demand to include Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell), his adversary, in the boardroom. However, when his request is denied, Baddingham resorts to sabotaging him instead. The question remains: who will emerge victorious and at what price?
Give it a shot if you’re fond of the book, appreciate the actors, or enjoy period dramas with a hint of drama and intrigue.
One Man’s Opinion of Rivals
In contrast to typical Disney+ series, this one doesn’t shy away, even showcasing some mature content. The initial scene set in an airplane bathroom hints that Rupert Campbell-Black is a ladies’ man who disregards rules and conventions. This carefree attitude is further demonstrated throughout the pilot, and it becomes clear that he embodies the role of the rogue character. However, he’s not the only one with a rebellious streak.
Here, there’s plenty of suspense and theatricality, intertwined with numerous soap opera elements and sexual intrigue. To put it simply, the climax of the pilot episode includes multiple romantic encounters unfolding, hinting at the direction the show will take and providing a glimpse into what viewers can anticipate.
Besides being engaging, the storyline is captivating. I’m fond of Tennant, Turner, and Hassell playing the main characters. The initial two episodes set the stage remarkably well, drawing you into the universe and leaving you eager to find out more. Each episode lasts around an hour, with all eight being accessible for streaming at once, making it effortless to watch them consecutively.
