Should Star Trek: Strang New Worlds bring romance to Captain Pike and Number One?

As a seasoned Star Trek fan with over three decades of space-time travel under my belt, I must say that the potential romantic entanglement between Captain Pike and Number One has left me more than a tad trepidatious.

In the initial episode of Star Trek: The Original Series titled “The Cage,” Captain Christopher Pike, portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter, led the Enterprise alongside his second-in-command Number One, played by Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. While on Talos IV, Captain Pike was coerced to pick a mate among three options: Number One, Yeoman Colt, or Vina. During this period, it was revealed that Number One harbored feelings for Pike. With the return of both Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and Number One (Rebecca Romjin) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Screenrant speculates a potential romantic development between them as a nod to the hints dropped in The Original Series.

But one character having fantasies about the other isn’t really teasing a romance. It’s more like unrequited love or just simply fantasies because the pair worked so closely together. It’s not odd for couples that never become couples to have fantasies about one another.

For the sake of Strange New Worlds, this is one relationship that I hope doesn’t happen because with every relationship comes the possibility of a break-up. Pike relies on Number One to be his sounding board, even his conscience at times. Mixing that with love could prove catastrophic for their ability to continue working together if things were to go awry. Take a look at what happened between Spock [Ethan Peck] and Nurse Chapel [Jess Bush] once they admitted their feelings for one another. Their relationship didn’t last longer than a minute, and there were hurt feelings. That wouldn’t work very well for a captain and his second in command.

Romjin and Mount may exhibit chemistry, but not all couples with chemistry need to be together. At times, their connection works best when kept separate, enhancing individual character development. In the case of Pike and Number One, their relationship thrives in their dynamic as a team.

I find it unlikely that Strange New Worlds would follow a path where Captain Pike, true to his Star Trek counterparts, prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of his ship and crew above all else. Given the nature of his character, he seems unwilling to take risks that could jeopardize these responsibilities. Establishing a romantic relationship with his second in command, especially one without a guarantee of a happy ending, would be an uncharacteristic move for Pike, as it could potentially disrupt the harmony and focus of the crew.
