Should Scott Bakula be a part of the Star Trek: Origins prequel?
As a longtime Trekkie with memories of starry nights spent huddled around our family’s old black-and-white TV, watching Captain Kirk boldly go where no man had gone before, I must say that the idea of Scott Bakula reprising his role as Captain Jonathan Archer in the upcoming Star Trek prequel movie has me both excited and apprehensive.
A Star Trek prequel film is in the works, focusing on the first encounter between humans and Vulcans within the Prime timeline. Since this movie happens before the Federation’s formation, a Screenrant writer named John Orquiola proposes that Scott Bakula might appear in the upcoming Origin film. He presents several compelling reasons as to why having Bakula onboard could enhance the movie significantly.
I’m totally open to the possibility of seeing Bakula back in Star Trek, but we don’t have enough information about this upcoming movie yet to determine if his involvement would be beneficial. My main worry is how much the film will deviate from the canon established in “Star Trek: First Contact.” There are many fans who share my apprehension on this matter. If Bakula is included, it could give credence to a production that might ultimately disappoint fans.
Captain Jonathan Archer, established before Kurtzman’s era, was handled differently compared to now. Characters were penned in a unique manner back then. Among the newer series, only Star Trek: Prodigy has managed to do justice to one of Starfleet’s distinguished captains from an earlier series, Captain Kathryn Janeway [played by Kate Mulgrew]. Personally, I believe Captain Christopher Pike [portrayed by Anson Mount] comes pretty close to the ideal captain in this modern Star Trek era. However, it’s worth noting that the upcoming film won’t be scripted by any of the writers from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or any of the current Star Trek series, who are familiar with writing a Starfleet captain.
The upcoming movie “Origins” will be penned by Seth Grahame-Smith, a renowned author whose works include the New York Times bestsellers “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter“, which were later adapted into films. Noteworthy is that Grahame-Smith lacks prior experience in writing for Star Trek, which might pose a challenge, particularly when handling a widely recognized character like Captain Archer.
Composing fresh characters unknown to us is certainly an option, yet unintentionally deviating from established characters might occur. It’s uncertain whether Star Trek enthusiasts are prepared for such changes at the moment.
