Should I Try It: The Decameron on Netflix
As a huge fan of historical dramas and quirky comedies, I was intrigued by the premise of “The Decameron” on Netflix. The combination of the Black Plague era and comedy is an unusual one, and I was excited to see how it would be executed.
As July nears its close, new shows typically take a backseat. The Summer Olympics are currently captivating audiences, leading to fewer premieres. However, what fresh content is emerging? Is it worth your while to tune in? In today’s discussion, I’ll be sharing insights about a newly-released Netflix show, helping you make an informed decision!
Series: The Decameron
Where to Find It: All eight episodes are now streaming on Netflix
Title Description:
Instead of adopting a solemn or grave tone towards the plague, this production takes a humorous turn. It’s not meant to be a depressing or heavy-handed portrayal, but rather a satire on society, class distinctions, and love during that era. The show is the brainchild of writer/creator Kathleen Jordan, who has previously worked on “American Princess” and “Teenage Bounty Hunter.” In this series, a diverse cast of nobles and servants hunker down in an Italian villa to weather out the plague. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, romantic entanglements develop.
In this story, there are several key characters with intriguing backstories. Pampinea, portrayed by Zosia Mamet, brings a generous dowry to wed the Lord, but he may not be as vibrant as she anticipated. Simultaneously, a young Lord named Tindaro (Douggie McMeekin) is being tightly controlled by his guardian Dioneo (Amar Chadha-Patel), who covets power and recognition for himself. Elsewhere, Filomena (Jessica Plummer), the pampered daughter of a Lord, has made no allies with her handmaid Licisca (Tanya Reynolds). When they clash and it seems Filomena has perished, Licisca steps in to take her place. The unexpected return of Filomena sets off an intriguing series of events.
I find myself living amongst many, clinging to health and striving for betterment amidst the chaos that surrounds us, as the world we once knew disintegrates before our eyes.
If you enjoy watching period dramas, have a soft spot for unusual love stories, and appreciate a good dose of dark humor, then you should give it a try.
One Man’s Opinion of The Decameron
Initially, I find some appealing aspects in this production. The inventive and occasionally unsettling opening theme for this series captivates me. It sets the stage perfectly for a unique perspective on this historical era, which deviates from the typical tone and appearance. Few anticipate humor when considering the Black Plague, yet here it is.
The eight-episode series boasts an excellent ensemble cast featuring Tony Hale and Karan Gill. Each episode lasts between 48 minutes and an hour. Consequently, it’s a brief commitment that can be completed in one sitting if desired. Personally, I believe the early episodes could benefit from being more succinct, as their length seems excessive for a comedy show.
I had some reservations about the show. The actors were great, and I appreciated the unique approach to that time period and genre. However, I wasn’t fully engaged with the plot or the characters. The initial episodes moved quite slowly for me, and I didn’t find myself hooked despite the strong cast and intriguing concept. Nevertheless, viewers who are passionate about this genre might find enough appeal to continue watching.
