Should Chimney Step Up as Captain? 9-1-1 Stars Weigh In!
The final part of the eighth season of 9-1-1, airing in 2025 TV lineup, experienced some tough times. Most notably, the shocking and saddening demise of Captain Bobby Nash, portrayed by Peter Krause, left a significant void for the 118 team. Not only did they lose their father figure, but also their captain, as Gerrard’s position was merely temporary. With Aisha Hinds declining the captain role and Henrietta “Hen” Wilson turning it down, there’s speculation surrounding Kenneth Choi’s character Howard “Chimney” Han. Both actors have shared their opinions on this possibility, and I find myself agreeing with one of their viewpoints.
At some point, Chimney temporarily took over as captain when Bobby was injured, but he may have taken things a bit too far. Moreover, Bobby left a significant impact, making it challenging for anyone to step into his shoes. As a result, it’s not shocking that Chimney, who is both a firefighter and paramedic, has been hesitant about pursuing the captaincy. However, Choi, speaking to TV Insider, explains that there are more reasons why he believes Chimney isn’t suited for the captaincy role.
No. Chimney’s not ready for any type of dutiful responsibilities whatsoever. Never.
Considering that Chimney temporarily took on a leadership role with an inflated sense of authority, it’s understandable why Choi feels this way. However, since then, it seems that Choi has learned effective team management skills, as evidenced by his passionate speech in the underwhelming season finale. While Choi might not be flawless, he appears to be undervaluing Chimney, and Aisha Hinds shares this perspective.
I’m not entirely ruling it out. I believe there might be some exaggeration in your statement. Given your reliability, I think he may be prepared for such a task.
The most effective captain might be the one who doesn’t assume he’s already qualified for the role, and I find myself in agreement with Hinds that Chimney demonstrates a strong sense of leadership and empathy. This perspective is especially compelling given that Hen bestowed the nickname “Cap” upon Chimney following his powerful speech. It’s heartening to know that Hinds shares similar admiration for her character as I do.

It’s clear that filling Bobby’s shoes will be a challenging task, despite fans holding onto hope that something exceptional could emerge from his departure. Given Bobby’s remarkable character, it’s understandable that the show’s characters and cast members might hesitate to choose his successor. However, it seems appropriate for the new 118 captain to come from within the team, as Hen is no longer around. In this situation, Chimney appears to be the most logical choice, considering his extensive experience. While Kenneth Choi may not see Chimney as fit, Aisha Hinds makes a valid point in the discussion.
Given the 118 fire truck can’t operate without a captain for an extended period, it’s likely that a new one will be selected at the commencement of Season 9 on ABC (unless one is appointed behind the scenes before then). However, whether Chimney assumes this role is uncertain. Ideally, it should be someone who embodies the polar opposite of Gerrard’s character.
