Tom Hanks is widely known as one of the kindest people in Hollywood. Stories like refunding tickets to a couple who didn’t enjoy his movie *Larry Crowne* and willingly appearing in Carly Rae Jepsen’s music video, even in cold weather, prove it. However, his son, Colin, recently shared who *he* believes deserves that title, and it makes a lot of sense.
Everyone generally agrees Tom Hanks is one of the kindest people in Hollywood, especially considering his reputation and the types of roles he usually takes. However, his son, Colin Hanks, jokingly suggested someone else deserves that title during an interview on NPR’s Morning Edition, and it’s easy to understand why he’d say that.
Everyone always says my dad is the nicest person in Hollywood, and honestly, it makes me want to shout, ‘They obviously never met John Candy!’
It seems Tom Hanks might have some competition for the title of ‘nicest guy’! While his son, Colin Hanks, naturally would be expected to say that about his dad, Colin’s work on his documentary, *John Candy: I Like Me*, has made many people realize just how kind and wonderful the late Canadian actor John Candy was.
Colin Hanks, the director of the documentary, aimed to celebrate the life and career of the beloved actor using old footage, clips from his most famous films, and stories from friends and colleagues. According to co-producer Glen Zipper, Hanks wanted the film to feel like one of John Candy’s own comedies – something that would make you both laugh and cry. And that’s exactly what I expect it to do.
Stories from John Candy’s memoir, *I Like Me*, show just how kind and funny he was. Steve Martin recalled that during the filming of *Planes, Trains, and Automobiles*, Candy always knew how to cheer him up – whether by hilariously mimicking the process of dubbing a movie or staging silly, pretend fight scenes.
Macaulay Culkin, who worked with John Candy in the movie *Uncle Buck* as a child, fondly remembers Candy being a very caring person. He recalled Candy noticing the tension between him and his father and showing genuine concern. These memories demonstrate that Candy was more than just a funny actor; he was a warm and kind man who will be dearly missed.
Colin Hanks already knew his father was a good person, but making a documentary about John Candy probably helped him truly understand how much warmth and kindness Candy brought to roles like the one in *Spaceballs*. Seeing old footage and hearing stories from Candy’s friends and family likely made it clear why so many people adored him.
The documentary *John Candy: I Like Me*, available on Amazon Prime, shows why Colin Hanks considered John Candy one of the kindest people in Hollywood.
