Shōgun wins big at Primetime Emmy Awards, as it should

As a critic who’s spent countless hours binge-watching and critically analyzing the best of television, I must say this year’s Emmy nominations have truly outdone themselves! From the wit and charm of “The Daily Show” to the suspenseful twists in “True Detective: Night Country”, it’s a veritable feast for the TV enthusiast.

At ABC, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were broadcasted, and the events unfolded much as anticipated. To put it another way, the historical drama masterpiece “Shōgun” clinched the title for Best Drama Series; the biting series “The Bear”, which leans more towards comedy than “Shōgun”, took home the award for Best Comedy Series; and the autobiographical suspenseful drama “Baby Reindeer” was crowned Best Limited or Anthology Series.

On this particular evening, those three individuals stood out as the main victors, each claiming four awards for their respective categories. As anticipated, Jeremy Allen White was awarded Best Actor In A Comedy Series. His fellow cast member, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, also took home a trophy for Best Supporting Actor. On the dramatic side, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai were the shining stars of the night, with Sanada winning Best Actor and Sawai being crowned Best Actress. I must admit, my interest was heavily invested in Sawai’s performance as Mariko, and if she hadn’t won, I would have felt compelled to pen a passionate letter to the decision-makers. In bold letters, just to emphasize my feelings.

Another noteworthy series is the HBO comedy “Hacks,” which surprisingly won the award for Best Comedy Series instead of “The Bear.” However, Jean Smart’s win for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series was entirely predictable.
