Shōgun showrunners confirm there are 2 more seasons in the works

As a long-time fan of historical epics and someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Japanese culture, I must say that last night’s Emmy sweep by FX’s Shōgun was nothing short of exhilarating. The series, based on James Clavell’s seminal novel, transported viewers to a time and place that felt almost tangible, and the performances were as riveting as they were authentic.

Last night, the FX series “Shōgun” collected four Primetime Emmy Awards, with Hiroyuki Sanada taking home Best Actor and Anna Sawai earning Best Actress. Additionally, it was awarded in 14 categories at the Creative Arts Emmys. This means that for a single season, “Shōgun” has now amassed a record-breaking total of 18 Emmy Awards, making it the most decorated TV show in a single season.

Given the acclaim it received, the return of Shōgun – inspired by James Clavell’s 1975 novel – on FX and Hulu this year was hardly unexpected. This historical epic, set in feudal Japan amid political turmoil, follows an Englishman who finds himself shipwrecked on its shores. The tale is dense, the production values are lavish, and the performances were outstanding. Consequently, it came as no shock when FX announced that another season was in the works.

Indeed, the first season of Shogun was a faithful adaptation of Clavell’s entire book. For future seasons, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks will need to develop additional storylines. In an interview on the Emmys red carpet, they mentioned that they are currently preparing not one but two more seasons of the show!

According to Mark, they’ve been working for roughly 47 days now in the scriptwriting room and have completed drafts for three episode outlines. He mentioned that scripts are forthcoming.

It turns out FX has been considering two seasons for Shōgun, which was something I wasn’t aware of earlier. The initial season took a considerable amount of time to produce, given the rich source material from James Clavell. While it makes sense that FX wants more of the series, I can’t help but wonder if the subsequent seasons will meet the exceptionally high standards set by the first one. Moreover, I should mention that Clavell penned several other books in his “Asian Saga.” It seems intriguing to consider adapting those stories instead.

It seems I might be spoiling the fun here, but congratulations on Shōgun’s Emmy triumph! I eagerly anticipate what future seasons hold. From Mark’s comments, it looks like we won’t be able to watch new episodes for a while yet. I’d estimate that 2026 is the earliest possible date.
