Shogun Season 2 Starts 2026 With Major Story Update

The popular FX historical drama Shogun is returning for a second season, with filming scheduled to begin early in 2026. The show, which first aired in 2024, is anticipated to premiere new episodes around 2027. While production is starting soon, details about the plot remain scarce, as Season 2 will move beyond the story of James Clavell’s original novel and explore new events.

Justin Marks and Rachel Condou, the creators of Shogun, recently shared some news about the upcoming second season. In an interview with Wired, they described Season 2 as a way to surprise viewers, explaining that the story will jump forward 10 years after the events of the first season.

Marks clarified that Season 2 wasn’t intended to simply continue the story from Season 1. Instead, the goal was to start a new chapter, effectively marking the beginning of a second part of the series.

We wanted to give the characters time to process their grief, so we decided to move beyond simply continuing the story from where Season 1 left off. Instead of feeling like an extended episode, we aimed for a clear break and a fresh start to a new chapter of the story.

Marks and Condou described Season 1 as a dramatic series filled with political maneuvering. However, they say Season 2 will be more about unexpected twists and turns.

The creators shared that a major focus of Season 2 will be the return of Ochiba no Kata, played by Fumi Nikaido. Her character will take on a more prominent role following the departure of Anna Sawai’s Lady Mariko (you can find details about Lady Mariko’s storyline here).

In the first season, the ballerina (Anna Sawai) was a key character, primarily contributing to the English-speaking portion of the narrative. The second part of the story focuses on Ochiba’s character as the central figure.

Marks and Condou revealed that the character Ochiba will be central to the upcoming season, as she’s inspired by Yodo-Dono, a historically significant figure and the wife of powerful leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The creators of Shogun explained that Season 2 is set during the peak of the Tokugawa shogunate and will focus on the growing influence of women in Japanese politics.

There’s no news yet on when Season 2 of Shogun will be released. However, filming for the Emmy-winning series is expected to begin soon in Vancouver, Canada. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are confirmed to return as leads in the new season, along with a strong supporting cast.

Set in historical Japan, Shogun explores the power struggles between lords and regional rulers just before the rise of the Toranaga shogunate. The second season will go beyond the story in James Clavell’s famous 1975 novel, moving forward in time to present a brand new, original narrative.

What To Expect From Shogun Season 2

Although FX hasn’t revealed much about Shogun Season 2, a few details about the new episodes have been shared with fans.

I was really excited by the latest project update! Hearing Season 2 will be full of surprises is great, especially after how amazing Season 1 was with all its twists. But what really got my attention was the showrunners mentioning Fumi Nikaido’s character, Ochiba no Kata. That’s something fans definitely need to remember – I have a feeling she’s going to be important!

The creators have stated that the character Nikaido is inspired by Yodo-Kun, a historical figure from Japan. Yodo-Kun was a concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the mother of his potential successor.

Viewers began to see this conflict develop in Season 1, when Ochiba no Kata gave birth to the son of the former ruler and became one of the few openly opposing Toranaga’s leadership. Now that Toranaga is in charge, Season 2 will likely show no Kata continuing to challenge him, leveraging her position as the mother of the legitimate heir to gain influence.

The second season of the show might cover the Siege of Osaka, a major military campaign largely planned by Yodo-Kun. Considering Season 1 was set around 1600, Season 2 will likely take place about ten years later, which would coincide with the historical Siege of Osaka in 1615.
