Shōgun Season 2 Announced: 10-Year Time Jump, Filming Kicks Off in 2026

There’s been some buzz lately about when the second season of the acclaimed show Shōgun will start filming, but now we have a fresh update to share! According to a recent report from Variety, production on the historical drama is set to commence in January 2026 in Vancouver. Given the tremendous success and fanbase of Shōgun, stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis will also be stepping up as co-executive producers for the series. Since Sanada had already earned a producer credit in Season 1, his new title as executive producer is well-deserved recognition for his contributions to the show.

The initial season of “Shōgun” was adapted from James Clavell’s novel with the same title. This author is renowned for his collection of grand historical novels, collectively known as the Asian Saga. Remarkably, the entire 10-episode season corresponded to the content of the book, as there were no plans initially to extend beyond the source material. However, spurred by the show’s unprecedented 18 Emmy wins and the public excitement it generated, Sanada and the production team have chosen to carry on with the series, delving into events that go beyond those depicted in the book.

Additionally, you should know that the second season of Shōgun isn’t the end of the story. Last year, news broke about FX agreeing to a deal with Sanada for more than just a second season – they’re also working on a third installment! This new season will be developed in collaboration with Clavell’s estate, Rachel Kondo, and Justin Marks, who were instrumental in producing and creating the first season.

‘Shōgun’ Season 2 Will Feature a Significant Time Jump

Apart from announcing when Season 2 of Shōgun begins, Variety also shared an intriguing detail about its plotline. Alongside the reappearance of Sanada and Jarvis’ roles as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne, Season 2 will unfold a decade after the events of Season 1. This time leap opens up numerous possibilities for the characters’ narratives. As per previous reports, Sanada mentioned that the show will still base its story and character development on authentic Japanese history.

According to FX, Shogun became their most-viewed show ever, indicating why it went past being just a limited series. Apart from its impressive Emmy awards, the program also received the Golden Globe for the best drama series, maintaining its dominance in critical circles. Given that the story is based on history, as seen in the novel and initial season, it’s not surprising that FX saw potential to extend the narrative beyond the original source material.

Since the production of the second season of Shōgun begins in 2026, viewers can anticipate its airing sometime between late 2026 and early 2027. In the meantime, there are several exciting series coming up on FX this year. One such series is Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth, slated to debut on FX on Hulu this summer. Additionally, The Bear Season 4 has been officially scheduled for release as well, ensuring that FX continues to deliver top-notch television content.
