Shōgun breaks Game of Thrones record at Creative Arts Emmys, sets sights on main Emmys

As a seasoned gamer and avid viewer of historical dramas, I must admit that my eyes were glued to the screen during every episode of Shōgun. The level of detail, authenticity, and sheer epicness of this production was unparalleled, making it an absolute joy to watch.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the television adaptation of “Shōgun,” drawn from James Clavell’s novel, truly left me spellbound when it graced our screens on FX and Hulu this year. This captivating saga, set against the backdrop of 17th century Japan, weaves a tale of war, strife, and resilience that resonated deeply with viewers, so much so that FX has already greenlit a second season, despite the fact that the first season encompassed the entirety of Clavell’s book.

Let’s observe how events unfold in the future. At present, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding “Shōgun”, as it’s currently awards season. Last weekend was when the Creative Arts Emmys were held, which are similar to the regular Emmys but honor categories that people typically don’t pay as much attention to. Remarkably, “Shōgun” won an impressive 14 awards at these ceremonies, including several notable ones.

Exceptional Acting Ensemble for a Dramatic Series

As an added touch, the documentary film “The Making of Shōgun” won the prize for Exceptional Short-Form Documentary or Reality Program. To put it simply, Shōgun was victorious in every category where it was up for consideration.

Previously, the record for the most Creative Arts Emmys won in a single night was held by Game of Thrones, taking home 12 awards during its controversial final season in 2019. However, Shogun has now surpassed this with 14 awards. Following this, Game of Thrones went on to win an additional 10 Emmys at the main ceremony, making it a total of 22 Emmys won in one year. Will Shogun be able to outdo this impressive feat as well?

While “Shogun” garnered a significant number of nominations at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on ABC this coming Sunday, September 15, it is not likely to surpass “Game of Thrones'” lead in terms of total awards. With 25 nominations, “Shogun” has made a strong showing, but in 2019, “Game of Thrones” racked up an impressive 32 nominations overall. The desire to honor the end of this iconic series likely contributed to its large number of nominations and hardware collected. Regardless of how many awards “Shogun” wins, it is unlikely to equal “Game of Thrones'” 2019 haul.

It appears that many continue to support the success of Shogun, and I myself am eagerly anticipating Anna Sawai receiving the Outstanding Lead Actress accolade for her portrayal of Lady Mariko. Here are the categories in which the show has been nominated:

  • Outstanding Drama Series
  • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for Hiroyuki Sanada)
  • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (for Anna Sawai)
  • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (for Tadanobu Asano)
  • Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series
  • Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Having thoroughly geeked out over “Shogun”, I thought it was high time to give a shoutout to some other series that shone at the Creative Arts Emmys. One of them being “Star Wars: Ahsoka”, which bagged an award for exceptional costume design in the fantasy/sci-fi category.

Shows such as “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Saturday Night Live” were among those that garnered numerous awards. Kudos to you all, keep up the great work!
