Shocking Twist in Netflix’s The Gardener Ending Revealed!
In Netflix’s latest Spanish production, “The Gardener,” a six-episode psychological thriller, tension is abundant. The narrative revolves around Elmer (Álvaro Rico), a tranquil individual who tends to plants at his mother’s gardening center, managed by La China Jurado (Cecilia Suárez). However, beneath the greenery and flower arrangements, there lies a chilling truth: La China operates a clandestine assassination service, and Elmer, scarred emotionally from a past accident, is the one who executes these murders with icy precision.
In the story titled “The Gardener“, it’s when Elmer gets tasked to eliminate Violeta (Catalina Sopelana), a gentle preschool teacher, that everything shifts. For the first time, he experiences something profound: affection. Yet, this unanticipated emotion poses a risk to his mother’s dominion. The narrative revolves around themes of violence, control, and the possibility for atonement—all set amidst an environment saturated with death.
Behind Elmer’s emotional emptiness
In the story titled “The Gardener“, Elmer Jurado serves as the principal and somewhat enigmatic figure. From his early years, he’s borne the emotional wounds of a significant trauma – a severe car accident involving him and his mother at the tender age of six. This incident caused damage to his right frontal lobe in the brain, which in turn hampered his capacity to experience emotions. Consequently, Elmer has navigated life in a detached manner, devoid of joy, sorrow, or love.
In the series, Elmer’s lack of emotion serves as his most powerful asset. Whereas others might find this void burdensome, for Elmer it means he can perform tasks with remarkable accuracy and speed. As a hired gun for his mother’s organization, he executes missions with an almost clinical precision—and without a hint of remorse. The nursery that his mother manages as a front for her true profession becomes Elmer’s sanctuary, a realm where logic prevails. Plants don’t demand feelings, only nurturing and attention—skills that Elmer excels at providing.
Who is Violeta, the woman marked for death?
In a nursery school, the teacher named Violeta is accused of causing the death of Xoan Costera, who was Sabela Costera’s son. To deal with Violeta, Sabela retains the services of the Jurados. However, as Elmer gets acquainted with her, he develops an unexpected feeling towards her, which eventually transforms into love.
Despite persistent pressure from his mother who views Violeta as a disruptor to her established world, Elmer wavers. He disregards commands, acts on impulse – such as when he brutally killed Mon, a friend of Xoan’s, for labeling Violeta a murderer – and experiences emotional turmoil. He begins to ponder if this ongoing cycle of violence is justified.
In my perspective as a film reviewer, the narrative unfolds with a poignant twist: The character Elmer is struck by an unexpected turn of events – a brain tumor. This medical condition stirs emotions within him that he had long suppressed. A surgical intervention could potentially restore him to his previous self, but Elmer chooses a different path. He yearns for love, specifically towards Violeta.
Is Violeta guilty of Xoan’s death?
Yes—and she has lied about it from the start.
In the course of the series, Violeta narrates two contradictory accounts. To the police, she claims she never encountered Xoan on that particular night. However, in a later conversation with Sabela, she asserts that she was with him and he accidentally fell from a bridge. Neither tale is accurate.
The unexpected turn occurs when we discover the truth behind the events: Xoan exhibited strange behavior. Following a heated dispute, he found himself close to the bridge’s edge. In a fit of rage, Violeta shoved him. It wasn’t premeditated—but it was an intentional action. She fully understood the consequences of her actions.
This revelation alters everything. Violeta isn’t merely a victim; she’s also concealing a massive error. Her remorse stems not only from the incident itself, but from the deceptions she employed to mask it.
The death of Sabela Costera and Violeta’s discovery
Elmer is determined to create a genuine future with Violeta, so he heads to Sabela’s residence in an attempt to persuade her to stop bothering Violeta. Disregarding his mother’s instructions, he decides not to carry out the task of eliminating their target.
In an attempt to flee the predicament, Sabela quickly grabs her phone and hurries off to the kitchen to fetch a knife. However, her plan backfires as Elmer ends up stabbing her instead. What Elmer doesn’t realize is that Catuxa, a friend of Violeta, has spotted him near Sabela’s residence. Upon receiving a message from Catuxa about Elmer and learning about Sabela’s demise, Violeta becomes increasingly anxious.
Understanding Elmer’s true identity, she makes an attempt to flee, but alas, it’s already past the point of escape. She is pursued relentlessly, and China Jurado concludes that since her own son refuses the task, another must take his place.
Instead of hiring Orson, another assassin, to complete the job, she decided to take matters into her own hands. However, Violeta was not defenseless—she ended Orson’s life by repeatedly striking him on the head with a stone.
Her initial contact was Elmer. Given their history, he’s the only person she feels secure enough to confide in. He aids her by secretly disposing of Orson’s remains and ensuring she steers clear of any legal complications.
Elmer was the first one she reached out to. Since they share a past, she knows he’s the one she can rely on without hesitation. He assists her by getting rid of Orson’s corpse discreetly and keeping her clear of any potential trouble.
Life after the surgery
Following Orson’s death, Elmer returns home, visibly rattled. In a moment of confrontation, he accuses his mother of having manipulated him throughout his life. He reveals that the task to eliminate Violeta was less about business and more about control. For the first time, raw emotions burst forth: anger, sorrow, exasperation. He declares that he can never forgive her for her deceit.
But China can’t let go. She hits him on the head and takes him to the hospital.
In that setting, she persuades the physician to perform the operation previously recommended in the sequence – the one aimed at excising the tumor and restoring Elmer. However, despite the doctor’s preference for Elmer’s approval, China makes the decision on his behalf. The surgery is carried out. For her, it was the sole means to reclaim the compliant, emotionless son she had known before – a model gardener devoid of feelings.
How does The Gardener end?
Weeks following the operation, life appears to return to its usual course. However, this is not the resumption that China had anticipated. Elmer retains all memories – including the one where she struck him.
He carries on tending to his garden, doing so silently, as thoughts of his time spent with Violeta linger in his mind.
In the climactic scenes of the series, I found myself witnessing Violeta’s arrival. It wasn’t a casual visit—far from it. She had come with a chilling intention: to ask for a life to be taken.
Will The Gardener have another season?
From the finale’s concluding scene, it’s possible that The Gardener might be renewed for another season, potentially featuring additional episodes. However, as of now, Netflix has not given any official confirmation regarding a second season.
