Shocking Secrets Unveiled in TWD: Dead City – Hershel’s Dark Past and Negan’s Betrayal!
This week’s humorous moment from “The Walking Dead: Dead City” goes like this: Why did the mainlanders cross the river? Negan jokes, “They didn’t.” However, he couldn’t be more mistaken. In Season 2, Episode 3 of “Dead City,” Maggie’s team ventures further into the city, encountering a hidden community of people, while Negan leads an operation to dismantle New Babylon’s forces. Furthermore, flashbacks reveal the growth of the Dama and Hershel’s unusual friendship.
In retrospect, Hershel was unwillingly trapped by the Dama to attract Maggie and Negan to Manhattan. The Dama expresses remorse for her actions towards Hershel in flashbacks, despite her intention of amputating his toe at a later time. However, this remorse seems insincere and even predatory, either intentionally or unintentionally. Presently, Hershel slays a walker within New Babylon, an act that doesn’t faze him due to his apocalyptic upbringing. What is surprising is the group’s delayed response to the sudden appearance of a jumpy walker. It seems as though everyone has forgotten most of their survival skills from the past two decades. From a distance, a woman concealed in foliage observes the group in the woods.
Maggie and New Babylon Cut Through a Walker-Filled Central Park
The Burazi Aren’t the Only Threats on New Babylon’s Tail
A man named The Croat is tasking Burazi with finding the New Babylonians in the park, all while ensuring Negan won’t need to harm a child he tried to save on a boat. One of the search party members, Waylen, steps up for this difficult mission. The Croat reminds Negan, “You don’t want children hurt,” to which Negan agrees. However, it’s worth noting that Negan’s current stance may not have always been the case. This notion might seem repetitive, but it’s important to remember that Negan has changed over time, as seen in the Season 7 finale of The Walking Dead, but this history doesn’t necessarily matter here.
In their ongoing disagreement, Narvaez and Maggie can’t agree on the next move. Perlie steps in to decide: they press forward for the methane. Navigating through the overgrown tall grass of Central Park, they are surrounded and unable to see potential dangers from all directions. There are monkeys from the zoo, Burazi chasing them, and unidentified onlookers. However, walkers often prove to be a more dangerous foe than people realize. As they move forward, the group becomes divided when walkers attack and start overpowering the New Babylonians.
In simpler terms, Croat and Negan discuss Dama, a character who, according to Croat, uses harshness to bring out people’s best qualities, as demonstrated when she gave him fragile candy after rescuing him, much like Hershel’s initial encounter with her. Dama is now treating Hershel similarly to how she treated the Croat. If Negan wants to reach his full potential, he must get involved. So, he goes to the park with Waylen to deal with the New Babylonians. Meanwhile, Maggie, Ginny, Narvaez, and Perlie manage to escape from the park. Hershel, however, is rescued by a mysterious teenage girl named Joan when left behind.
Maggie Meets a New Group in Manhattan
As Negan Turns on His Heroic Side, Maggie and Perlie Are Taken In by Roksana
The other survivors are saved by the enigmatic group led by the girl, who reside in isolation and follow a rudimentary lifestyle, relying on nature and walkers for protection. Their chief, Roksana, shows kindness by allowing them to remain temporarily, keeping peace until the Burazi depart. They can be considered benevolent. When Hershel finds himself alone once more, he recalls his imprisonment at the hands of the Dama. To alleviate his feelings of solitude, she subtly misled him, suggesting Maggie neglected him due to her intense animosity towards Negan. This is the origin of Hershel’s growing resentment towards Maggie.
Negan sacrifices Waylen in the park, secretly hoping this move would save Hershel. Unfortunately for him, Waylen endured long enough to injure Joan. To end Waylen’s suffering, Negan took his life, but Hershel wasn’t pleased. He had a chance to eliminate Negan, but missed it. Just as he vanished from the scene, Narvaez proposed an alliance to Perlie: they should take control of Roksana’s people at the right opportunity. By doing so, New Babylon could gain access to methane and establish a base for production. This is reminiscent of colonialism in its most basic form – offering help and a promising future while assimilating others into their own culture. It’s a chilling echo of history repeating itself.
Hershel Remembers the Dama’s Mission
Flashbacks Reveal How the Dama Treated Hershel During His Captivity
In a subsequent flashback, instead of scolding Hershel for attempting to break free from confinement, the Dama chooses to honor him by providing him with his own private quarters overlooking the shattered city. This gesture is intended to convey her belief in erasing the past and starting anew. Although viewers might have already guessed this, Hershel remains oblivious to the truth. Upon reuniting with Maggie, he discloses the events that transpired in the forest. As expected, their conversation about Negan results in another disagreement, leaving the matter unresolved.
Perlie pleads with Roksana to grab his first aid kit to help the wounded girl. However, Roksana declines, asserting that her group has figured out their own method of survival. Joan, a fourth grader who survived when the dead came back to life, was looked after by Roksana not too long afterwards. Unfortunately, Joan succumbs to an injury while holding Hershel’s drawing close to her heart. Afterwards, Roksana and her group carry out a ritual that involves extracting Joan’s heart for walkers to consume, allowing her to come back as one of the undead.
Negan emotionally gets the Croat, asserting that he discovered only death in Central Park. However, it’s clear to the Croat that Negan is being untruthful. In a more candid conversation, Hershel confides in his mother about his attraction to Manhattan. He feels a connection with the ruined city that everyone left behind, seeing it as an opportunity for transformation and leaving behind all the suffering he has endured. This renewal, though, comes at a cost: he must covertly assist the Dama.
