Given that “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a prominent TV series on Hulu, it seems logical that the creative team behind the show would decide when to conclude it, rather than the series being canceled prematurely. Since they have expanded June’s story beyond Margaret Atwood’s book and then helped her escape from Gilead into relative safety in Canada, it becomes clear why they might have started contemplating the endgame after season 4.

Yet, the idea had been conceived well in advance: Bruce Miller, the original creator and showrunner, disclosed to THR that he initially proposed it as a five-season series, which later evolved into six seasons. Yahlin Chang, co-showrunner, further mentioned.

During a brief prelude to the commencement of our writers’ room for season five, we conversed with Bruce, and he suggested, “It seems we have two more seasons ahead.” He further added, “I believe we should continue for two more.” To which we replied, “Alright, let’s proceed. We’ll create two more.

Considering the tumultuous journeys of main characters like June, Serena, Lawrence, Janine, Nick, Moira, and others, who have experienced so much throughout the years, it’s challenging to predict where things might lead in The Handmaid’s Tale season 7. Creator Bruce Miller Will Oversee The Sequel

Margaret Atwood’s novel “The Testaments,” a sequel to her earlier work “The Handmaid’s Tale” published in 1985, hit the shelves in 2019. Given that the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale” had expanded beyond the book, it was expected that changes would be required when adapting the sequel too. True to anticipation, an adaptation was announced shortly after the book release, and now, it is being brought to life on Hulu as planned. As the story of “The Handmaid’s Tale” concludes, attention has shifted towards “The Testaments.” In particular, Bruce Miller stepped down from “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2023 to focus on “The Testaments,” a cast has been assembled for it, and Hulu has given the series a green light.

Fifteen years after Atwood’s novel, the narrative shifts to encompass various characters within and beyond Gilead. The tale is recounted through the viewpoints of Aunt Lydia (through her diaries) and two girls – Agnes and Daisy, who are also known as June, Hannah, and Nicole’s daughters.

The TV series is set approximately four years following the conclusion of June’s tale, allowing it to expand beyond Atwood’s initial ending. Though the storyline will continue to revolve around Gilead and its eventual destruction, the show’s atmosphere may change significantly due to the inclusion of younger characters, as Miller shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

We aimed to create a fresh take on our show – it features newer characters, has a distinctly different atmosphere and ambiance, yet remains set in Gilead. I hope that fans will find the familiar elements engaging while also enjoying the novelty of the new content.

The movie “The Testaments” hasn’t set a specific release date as of now, but filming started in April 2025. Given this timeline, it’s likely that we might see the film in 2026, possibly during the spring season. This is a reasonable assumption since four out of the six seasons of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premiered in April.

How The Handmaid’s Tale Set Up The Testaments

Some Story Elements Are Now In Place

In “The Handmaid’s Tale,” certain elements have been set up for its sequel, “The Testaments,” with Aunt Lydia’s character arc being one of the most significant and direct changes. In the upcoming story, Aunt Lydia will transform into a much more defiant character, working towards the downfall of Gilead. This shift was once inconceivable during earlier seasons, but Aunt Lydia has slowly come to realize the harshness of Gilead, with this revelation becoming more pronounced than ever in season 6.
