Shocking Filming Technique Revealed for ’28 Years Later’ – You Won’t Believe It!
28 Years After serves as the much-awaited sequel to the groundbreaking zombie thriller, 28 Days Later (from 2002), which significantly shaped the horror genre for more than two decades. This eagerly awaited movie maintains a distinctive visual style similar to its predecessor but introduces an essential alteration in the way viewers will immerse themselves in the terrifying narrative.
In an interview with IGN, director Danny Boyle shared that the upcoming sequel to “28 Years Later” was shot in a widescreen format, unlike the original 2002 film which was filmed using a digital video recorder in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The new movie employs a 2.76:1 ratio, a significantly wider format that encourages viewers to scan and look around on the big screen for zombies, creating an immersive experience. Boyle elaborated on the visual shift and its impact on the sequel.
In this production, we opted for a broad screen layout. We felt that recreating the initial film’s discomfort regarding speed and velocity, as well as the intense portrayal of the infected, would be more effective in a widescreen format. This way, they could appear anywhere on the screen, requiring constant vigilance and scanning to spot them.
For the movie “28 Years Later”, the filmmakers innovatively employed a custom-built rig containing 20 iPhones 15 Pro Max for certain scenes. This setup allowed them to capture the wide-screen format, as seen in the image provided below. Previously, it was announced that they used this iPhone technology to achieve the distinctive visual style of the film. Director Boyle discussed their use of this new tech, which also includes smaller setups with fewer phones, while hinting at a spectacular shot created using the 20-camera rig.
For every eight cameras, there’s one compact enough for a single person to carry. Similarly, we have sets for ten and twenty cameras. In the second half of the film, there’s an extraordinary shot that I rarely mention, but when you see it, you’ll recognize it. It’s a powerful, striking image that employs the 20-camera setup, and it will transport you into a new realm, rather than seeming familiar or repetitive.
