Shipyard Games, the Supercell-backed mobile games studio has shut down

As a dedicated gamer and follower of the mobile gaming industry, I have to admit that the closure of Shipyard Games has left me feeling a tad melancholic. I’ve been watching Wizards & Kingdoms GO with bated breath since its early release, captivated by its potential and the vibrant community it was nurturing.

The mobile game studio, Shipyard Games, supported by Supercell, has officially announced that it is closing down. In a mixed statement, they have disclosed that they will be halting their operations, marking the end of development for their geolocation game, Wizards & Kingdoms GO, which had shown great potential.

Shipyard Games announced the shut down on its official Discord channel back in May 2024

Andreas Wedenberg, head of Shipyard Games, confirmed that the game has been gaining a rapidly expanding and enthusiastic fanbase since its debut two months back. Launched with only enough material for about a week or two of play, the gamers have remained actively involved and are eagerly looking forward to more content being rolled out.

He shared the roadmap of what was planned for the game, which was a grand list for sure. However, Shipyard Games faced critical financial difficulties. It was also mentioned that the company had been running out of funds, and their previous investor decided not to continue supporting them. Shipyard Games had secured $2.9 million in seed funding from Supercell back in April 2017.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the studio based in Helsinki had to part ways at the beginning of May 2024. Consequently, the development and updates for Wizards & Kingdoms GO came to a halt, leading to the game being eventually taken offline since the company could no longer sustain the server costs. The news was shared through the studio’s Discord channel.

In the name of our dedicated team, Andreas penned a heartfelt thank-you note to our community, expressing: “We deeply value every bit of your assistance, insightful feedback, bug reports, memes, tutorials, and kind words towards us. Regrettably, we didn’t manage to complete the game that you all deserve; however, dreams frequently require money to come true, and we’ve unfortunately run out.”
