Shin Godzilla is returning to North American theaters for a 4K remastered re-release.

According to Variety, distribution rights for Hideaki Anno’s 2016 film “Shin Godzilla” in North America have been obtained by Gkids. The movie is now set to appear on the big screen in stunning 4K quality, featuring its original Japanese audio, English subtitles, and restored intertitle cards. This will be the first release of a “Godzilla” film since Toho purchased Gkids last year.

David Jesteadt, President of Gkids, expressed, “Featuring a remarkably relevant tale about unity in preventing an impending disaster, along with some of the most thrilling action sequences the series has offered, ‘Shin Godzilla’ is a contemporary masterpiece. It’s an honor for us to contribute to its return for American viewers, presenting an improved version than before.

Keiji Ota, Toho’s top Godzilla executive, noted that “Shin Godzilla” was the first Japanese-made Godzilla movie since the debut of “Godzilla: Final Wars” in 2004. When it premiered, it sparked a cultural sensation in Japan, significantly contributing to the revival of the Godzilla series after a 12-year break. We’re excited to reintroduce this groundbreaking film to North American audiences on the big screen.

Ota went on saying, “This might be the very first encounter for many with Godzilla, and there’s nothing quite like sensing the immense presence, raw power, and fearsome nature of Godzilla in a cinema setting. Have a great time watching the movie!

In international box office earnings, “Shin Godzilla” brought home a whopping $79 million USD. However, it briefly held the title for the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film until “Godzilla Minus One,” released in 2023, surpassed it.

Shin Godzilla hits North American theaters on August 14.
