Shetland spoilers follow.
The TV show Shetland surprised viewers with a major development regarding Billy McCabe. Throughout most of the series, Sergeant McCabe seemed like a trustworthy character, but the most recent episode hinted at a hidden, darker side.
The latest season of the BBC show centers around the death of Eadie Tulloch, who was found bound and left outdoors for several days.
What to Read Next
The latest episode revealed more about Eadie’s death, showing that the £400,000 in her bank account actually belonged to her late husband, Robert, who was a police officer. It appears he may have obtained the money illegally.
We were missing two crucial pieces of information… until we discovered Billy had them all along.
Billy and Robert became close colleagues when Billy first joined the police force. Robert later introduced Billy to his future wife, Morag. Before Robert’s death, he asked Billy and Morag to check in on his own wife from time to time.

Now that Robert and Eadie have passed away, secrets are likely to come to light.
Viewers expressed disbelief and shock after the recent developments. On X, one person wrote, “No way, is Billy involved?” Others echoed the sentiment, with one saying, “Billy isn’t corrupt, is he?” and another exclaiming, “There’s no way Billy’s a bad cop!”
Someone else suggested Billy was taking the documents to cover for his colleague, Morag. They strongly believed Billy wasn’t corrupt and wouldn’t do anything dishonest.

I’m really excited because Alison O’Donnell, who plays Tosh, hinted we’re going to find out a lot more about Billy this season, especially as the case unfolds. She said their characters have already been through so much together, so I’m expecting some big reveals!
The emotional connection between their characters, first shown when Tosh experienced a sexual assault in season three, has guided everything Lewis and I have created since then. Seeing that close bond potentially fall apart is incredibly difficult for both characters. Tosh will struggle with conflicting loyalties and a nearly impossible decision.
Shetland airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
