Shetland star reveals “daunting” challenge of new “wacky” murder mystery role

Actress Phyllis Logan, known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Shetland, has confessed that taking on such an eccentric character in her latest project is rather intimidating.

The star is leading the five-part comedy-drama “Murder Most Perplexing,” which is based on the “Puzzle Lady Mystery” book series by Parnell Hall.

The unique protagonist Cora Felton drew Logan into the venture, and it wasn’t just the captivating script that intrigued him. Yet, Cora expressed concerns about the demanding nature of leading an entire series.

The character Cora Felton was what hooked Logan on the project, not only because of the interesting storyline, but also because she was concerned about having to carry a whole series by herself.

In a conversation with Radio Times, Logan disclosed that director Tom Dalton traveled to Scotland to hear her apprehensions directly from her.

She expressed that she felt somewhat anxious due to the heavy workload ahead, but after some self-encouragement, she decided to take it on. So, she agreed and moved forward with it.

Logan added: “I found it challenging to take on the main role, but I figured why not? Honestly, typical police investigations don’t really grab my attention.

I enjoyed my stay in Shetland alongside Ashley Jensen, as the plot took an unexpected turn and I got to play a complex, villainous character. It was quite fulfilling! Additionally, I starred in a series titled ‘Guilt,’ which offered something unique – it was more of a dark comedy.

The “Puzzle Lady” caught my interest as it’s so quirky and unique, and I hope it proves to be entertaining for everyone. I sincerely hope that the audience appreciates it for its amusing aspects. It certainly can’t be criticized for being gloomy or depressing.

Cora Felton, once an accomplished crossword puzzle whiz, now lends her unique skills to police investigations. She’s called in to assist the authorities when they encounter a baffling case that seems to involve her specific area of expertise – a crossword puzzle clue found at the scene of a murder.

In September, you can catch the concluding chapter of the “Downton Abbey” film series in theaters. Logally plays the role of Mrs. Hughes in this popular historical drama across all its three cinema adaptations.

Meanwhile, season 10 of Shetland commenced filming earlier this year with some new cast members.
