Shetland star lands next movie role in ’60s-set period drama

Actor Douglas Henshall, previously known for his role on Shetland, has been added to the cast of Angh, a dramatic series set in India during the 1960s.

The actor known for portraying DI Jimmy Pérez in the initial seven seasons of a BBC crime drama has agreed to work on Theja Rio’s first directorial project. This film will be shot in the northeastern Indian state of Nagaland, as reported by Variety.

In a forthcoming display, “Angh” is expected to unveil an unexplored episode from the local chronicles. The plot will revolve around a noble Konyak leader wrestling with preserving his fading customs upon the advent of an American missionary.

Facing the threat of famine and worsening health conditions for his wife, the leader and his silent child find themselves in a heart-wrenching situation where prioritizing survival conflicts with staying loyal to their cultural heritage.

In the looming shadow of famine and as his wife’s health declines, the chief and his non-verbal son are confronted by a seemingly impossible dilemma between ensuring their own survival versus adhering to their deeply rooted traditions.

Henshall, known for his roles in “Primeval” and “Murder Is Easy”, is rumored to take on a significant part in an upcoming period-drama. The ensemble features numerous debuting actors hailing from the Nagaland area, all local talents to this production.

Rio expressed great enthusiasm about the project, stating, ‘We can’t wait to breathe life into this tale.’ The rich history, unique traditions, and hidden tales of Nagaland have a tremendous capacity for cinema, and this movie serves as our means to showcase these aspects globally.

Filming in 16mm format, working alongside local talent, and including Douglas Henshall in our adventure, gives this production a unique charm. We’re confident that it will enrich the cinematic scenery significantly.

According to producer Nancy Nisa Beso of Winter Hymns Films, this movie holds a deeply personal significance for us. We’re sharing a tale grounded in Nagaland’s past, yet its universal themes resonate widely.

Combining local skills, a vibrant youthful team from abroad, and using 16mm film stock creates an uncommon and captivating process. Adding Douglas Henshall to our group enhances our perspective even more, and we eagerly anticipate revealing this movie globally.

Although Henshall departed his position on Shetland in 2022, the crime drama remains robust, with Ashley Jensen taking over as the main character. The series, inspired by Ann Cleeves’ novels, is set to make a comeback later this year for its tenth season, following filming that started earlier this month.

Angh currently has no release date, whilst Shetland airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
