As I watch Sheryl Lee Ralph bravely facing the wrath of Hurricane Beryl from her home in Jamaica, my heart goes out to her and her family. The image of her appealing for prayers and good vibes as she hunkers down in the darkness is both humbling and inspiring. Her resilience in the face of this natural disaster is a testament to her strength and character.
Sheryl Lee Ralph and her family are safe and praying the sun will come out tomorrow.
On Tuesday, the “Abbott Elementary” actress asked for prayers from her Jamaican residence as she got ready to face Hurricane Beryl’s arrival along the island’s southern coast on Wednesday night. The hurricane, which had made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula by Friday, was now downgraded to a tropical storm after bringing over twelve hours of heavy rain.
“Ralph expressed his gratitude in a Thursday video on X, saying ‘I want to thank you all for your positive thoughts and prayers.’ Despite having no electricity and no lights, ‘we’re still alive.'”
The actor has traveled to Kingston for her son Etienne Maurice’s upcoming marriage to ABC News producer Stephanie Wash. In spite of the threatening weather, the couple has not hinted at any plans to call off or reschedule their Saturday wedding, and the mother-of-the-groom is hopeful for good weather, even going so far as to pray for sunshine and singing to the storm in wishful expectation.
I’ve narrowly escaped the wrath of Hurricane Beryl’s eye, but she’s moving on to other places now. In my post, I want to mention that Kingston didn’t take a direct hit from the storm, but the small Caribbean island of Carriacou in Grenada is still in need of assistance.
Based on satellite images from Maxar Technologies, Carriacou and its nearby island Petite Martinique suffered extensive damage as a result of Hurricane Beryl’s powerful winds, blowing at around 150 mph. Authorities estimated that almost all buildings on these islands, approximately 98%, had been leveled.
I’m deeply moved by the situation we find ourselves in, and as your prime minister, I believe we must start anew with fresh foundations. At a recent briefing, I expressed this perspective.
During the same period, Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness informed CBC that while the country experienced harm to its coastline, housing structures, and roadways, it managed to avoid the most severe damage.
As a movie buff, I’d say it this way: “I keep encouraging you to pray for others with the same fervor as you pray for yourself and spread positivity around, because there are individuals out there who truly need it.”
Starting from this Friday afternoon, I’m moving northwestward as a storm. According to the National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, I’m forecasted to reach northeastern Mexico and southern Texas by the end of the weekend.
At least ten people have lost their lives in the reported incident, according to the BBC; Three fatalities were recorded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Venezuela each, while one death occurred in Jamaica.
