Sherlock’s Martin Freeman’s next detective in Netflix whodunnit is ‘surprising’ in one key way

Martin Freeman, known for his role in Sherlock, has talked about what makes his new mystery series, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix, stand out. He’s one of many talented actors in the show, which is based on Agatha Christie’s 1929 novel, The Seven Dials Mystery.

The new Netflix series is written by Chris Chibnall, who was the showrunner for Doctor Who from 2018 to 2022. It stars Mia McKenna-Bruce, known for How To Have Sex, as Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent, and features Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham.

Freeman takes on the role of Superintendent Battle, and Corey Mylchreest, known for Queen Charlotte, plays Gerry Wade. Nabhaan Rizwan and Edward Bluemel appear as Ronnie Devereux and Jimmy Thesiger, respectively.

Commenting on the new series directed by Chris Sweeney, Freeman expressed surprise at Christie’s storyline, noting that the character of Bundle, played by McKenna-Bruce, stands out from the author’s typical detectives.

Although I wasn’t familiar with Agatha Christie’s work growing up, I was surprised by the character of Bundle because she’s significantly younger than Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, as I learned from RadioTimes.

The star explained that Chris’s writing updates the story in a way that feels modern and genuine, without forcing it to be trendy. It feels current while still respecting the original time period.

McKenna-Bruce’s Bundle is described as “the unlikeliest of sleuths” in the official synopsis.

The story is set in England in 1925. It begins with a grand house party where a prank takes a dark and deadly turn, resulting in a murder.

Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent, known for her curious nature, must solve a frightening mystery within a grand country house – a mystery that will forever alter her life.
