Sherlock Star’s New Role: Tiny Theatre, Big Drama?
Previously, she graced the screens of BBC’s prime-time detective series Sherlock, which consistently attracted over seven million viewers during its highest viewership periods.
However, after her allegations of bullying against dance partner Giovanni Pernice led to public uproar, actress Amanda Abbington has found herself in a more private setting for her new role. She is now performing in a theater tucked away behind a pub in North London.
The actress is set to spend a month performing in a production titled “(This Is Not) A Happy Room” at the fashionable King’s Head Theatre in Islington. In this role, she will be playing Esther.
For the upcoming premiere on March 26, which is a preview event, the theatre has a capacity of about 180 people. However, as of yesterday, only 64 tickets, priced between £10 and £35 each, had been purchased for this special night.
52-year-old Ms. Abbington, mother of two from her partnership with Martin Freeman (known for The Office and Sherlock), will be working alongside Rosie Day, co-star of Outlander, who also penned the critically acclaimed dark comedy that has been compared to both Saltburn and Schitt’s Creek.
It’s intriguing to ponder if Amanda wouldn’t have been involved in the dispute with Giovanni, she could have potentially landed a more prominent and higher-paying role instead.
What a pity they had a falling-out. If they hadn’t, they might have taken home the Strictly trophy, making Amanda the talk of the town. However, she felt compelled to stand up for other women. It’s debatable if this decision may have had some consequences.
During March 2024, Mr. Pernice left the popular show following complaints made by Ms. Abbington to the BBC regarding his conduct and an ensuing investigation. In recent discussions with The Mail on Sunday, he expressed that the BBC has no plans to reinstate him for the upcoming UK series, even though a review cleared him of the gravest accusations against him.
Nevertheless, Mr. Pernice has emerged victorious in the Italian adaptation of the BBC’s dance competition, “Ballando Con Le Stelle,” alongside actress and popular screen personality, Bianca Guaccero. It is anticipated that he will rejoin the Italian program in September.
At present, the individual aged 34 years old is engaged in a U.K. tour titled “The Last Dance,” which is nearly fully booked. Notably, he has verified that this will be his final tour.
Ms. Abbington is primarily recognized for her roles as Miss Mardle in Mr. Selfridge and Mary Watson in the BBC’s interpretation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s renowned detective tales, namely Sherlock.
Last year, she starred in a show at the Park Theatre in North London called When It Happens To You.
