Sheridan Smith’s drama that was branded her ‘best performance yet’ is “worth the wait” on Netflix

Okay, so I just saw that Care, a BBC drama from 2018, is hitting Netflix soon, and it’s already in that little section Netflix has for shows they think are worth checking out. The cast is seriously good – you’ve got Sheridan Smith, Alison Steadman (you probably know her from Gavin and Stacey), and Sinéad Keenan (Unforgotten). It’s about a mom who unexpectedly has to become a caregiver for her own mother after she has a stroke. Sounds intense!

The 90-minute drama was created and written by Jimmy McGovern, known for shows like Time and the recent BBC drama Unforgivable. He co-wrote it with Gillian Juckes, a new writer.

The new series follows Jenny, a busy single mom of two, whose mother, Mary, provides essential childcare, allowing her to work full-time. When Mary suffers a stroke and is later diagnosed with dementia, their lives are turned upside down, profoundly impacting Jenny, Mary, and Jenny’s sister, Claire.

According to a description from Care, Jenny is struggling to balance her own needs with taking care of her mother, but she believes there might be another solution – and she’s determined to find it.

When it first came out, the series Care received a lot of positive attention. A review in The Guardian gave it four stars, praising Sheridan Smith’s performance as outstanding and calling the show a sensitively portrayed drama. The review also stated that this was Smith’s strongest performance to date.

The i Paper gave the show a perfect five-star rating, calling it another intense mix of politics and personal stories by Jimmy McGovern. Independent described it as a challenging watch, stating that Care is a heartbreaking look at a truly awful experience.

What to Read Next

The film Care is expected to gain a much wider audience when it becomes available on Netflix. Sheridan Smith, a well-known British actress, has recently appeared in the ITV series I Fought the Law and the Paramount+ thriller The Castaways.

Sinéad Keenan recently appeared in the new Netflix murder mystery, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, created by the writer of Derry Girls, Lisa McGee. She’s also a lead in the popular ITV crime drama Unforgotten, taking over the role from Nicola Walker.

Good news for fans of Unforgotten: while the first four seasons are disappearing from Netflix soon, you can still watch them on ITVX. It’s a great show to catch up on before the latest season premieres!
