Sheridan Smith, known for her role in Gavin and Stacey, is taking on a very different kind of part in the upcoming ITV thriller Two Birds. While promoting her new crime drama, The Cage, which airs on Sunday, April 26th, Smith discussed how she prepared to play Izzie Cronwell, a troubled police officer in Two Birds.
In an interview with Metro and other news outlets, Smith shared that she’s enrolled in a £2,350 intensive training program and following a very strict diet to prepare for her role as PC Cromwell. She also mentioned the difficulties of the job ahead.
Smith admitted he’s not a gambler, but his next job is unlike anything he’s ever done. It requires him to learn skills like gun handling, combat, and motorcycle riding – he’s already fallen off the bike twice while training in Australia. He joked that this new challenge feels like a real gamble.

ITV calls this six-episode series a thrilling and exciting mystery. It follows Izzie, played by Smith, who moves to Australia for a fresh start after the heartbreaking loss of her husband.
Izzie faces a difficult journey to reconnect with her daughter, who is understandably worried by her mother’s past actions and finds it hard to trust her again.

Still dealing with her own loss, the detective finds herself thrown into a new case – a murder investigation – and must work alongside her new boss, Detective Matt (Stephen Peacocke).
As the investigation continues, the victim is revealed to be connected to the powerful Baxter family, headed by the intimidating Mrs. Baxter (Judy Davis). This raises the pressure on the case, and Mrs. Baxter is determined to find out what happened and protect her family.
The night before Izzie starts working on the case, a final, carefree celebration takes a terrible turn. A quick decision has lasting and irreversible effects, leaving Izzie with a secret she desperately tries to hide.
Smith expressed her enthusiasm about being cast in the role, describing her character, Izzie Cornwell, as a fascinating and complicated woman starting over in Australia. She praised creator Helen FitzGerald for writing a fantastic part, explaining that Izzie unexpectedly finds herself caught up in a tangle of secrets and deception.

In her next role, Smith stars in the crime drama The Cage. She plays Leanne, a charming casino cashier who gets into trouble when she desperately tries to protect her family and save their home.
Leanne’s life gets complicated when she discovers her boss, Matty, is also stealing money from the casino – she’s been doing the same to get by. Soon, both the gangsters and the police start to suspect something is happening. As trouble mounts, Leanne and Matty must rely on each other, but Leanne questions where her true loyalty lies and Matty battles his personal struggles.
You can watch “The Cage” starting April 26th at 9pm on BBC One. All episodes will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer from that same day.
