Sheridan Smith show branded “preposterous” but “hard to resist” is leaving Netflix soon

Cleaning Up, the ITV drama starring Sheridan Smith, is leaving Netflix next month.

The six-part series sees Smith play Sam Cook, a debt-ridden mother who works as a cleaner at a financial company in Canary Wharf. Faced with a gambling addiction and the prospect of losing custody of her children, Sam engages in insider training to get back on her feet.

After premiering in 2019, “Cleaning Up,” a series penned and produced by Mark Marlow, was uploaded onto Netflix. However, viewers who wish to watch this drama in its entirety should act fast, as it will be removed from the streaming service on April Fool’s Day. It has recently been listed under the “Leaving Soon” section.

Also starring Jade Anouka and Doc Brown, Cleaning Up received generally positive reviews for its pulpy quality as the plot became sillier, with the show boasting a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 12 reviews.

You can read a selection of reviews below:

New Statesman

“This is completely preposterous, of course, but the series also comes with a stickily sentimental, lightly Dickensian atmosphere that might be just right for this time of year.”

The Guardian

“Indispensable to it are the actors, who throw themselves uncynically into it with their whole hearts. This is always Smith’s greatest gift, and here she is surrounded by a supporting cast doing likewise.”

The Daily Telegraph

“Smith is never less than watchable. After this first episode the temptation for another flutter may be hard to resist.”

The Sunday Times

“Smith is such a seamless, subtle actor, she absorbed the balder moments of Robin Hood rhetoric: you could see the rebellious schoolgirl still lurking inside her, suspicious of authority, toughened up by disappointment.”

The Herald Scotland

Cleaning Up groans under the weight of contrivances, but what will make viewers return next week, despite the plot being as daft as a loo brush, is Smith.”

Cleaning Up is streaming on Netflix.
