Sheridan Smith Returns to TV Screens After West End Disaster

Sheridan Smith will soon be back on TV screens after landing the lead in a major new BBC drama.

Noted actress is set to share the screen with Michael Socha from Showtrial in The Cage, an intriguing crime series that unfolds within a casino on Merseyside.

In a drama penned by BAFTA-nominated Tony Schumacher (The Responder), broadcast on BBC One, we follow Leanne (Smith) and Matty (Socha). It turns out that these characters, who share a workplace at an inner-city casino, have both been secretly stealing from the same safe.

The upcoming five-act play is set to be helmed by Al Mackay (known for “Kidnapped” and “Without Sin”), and it will be filmed in and around Liverpool and Merseyside. Filming is expected to commence within the next few weeks.

Writer Tony Schumacher hinted, “I’m expecting folks will find it amusing, eerie yet, above all, overflowing with affection, spirit, and excitement. I can hardly wait for everyone to witness it.

The newly acquired position arises following the disclosure that Sheridan postponed indefinitely the publication of her eagerly anticipated autobiography titled “Honestly.

2021 saw the announcement of a revealing memoir, planned to delve into the actress’s most challenging experiences, encompassing personal battles with alcoholism, mental health issues, and significant romantic ties – notably with actors like James Corden and Jamie Horn, the latter being the father of her child.

Ultimately, due to numerous setbacks, the project ended up being scrapped. According to an insider speaking to The Sun, ‘Sheridan has been overwhelmed with commitments lately, leaving him without the necessary time to complete the final stages of the book.’

Her perspective has shifted, and she’s reluctant for this particular portrayal to be published. She’s uncertain if she’s comfortable with sharing the entirety of her life experiences for public consumption.

It was not unexpected for those well-versed in the ongoing challenges faced by the actor known for playing The Huntsman, as this decision aligns with their past struggles.

In 2016, the actress experienced a high-profile breakdown during her performance in the London’s West End play, Funny Girl.

Her mental health problems worsened significantly due to stress, fatigue, and her father’s cancer diagnosis, leading her to temporarily step away from the show.

Reflecting on that period, Sheridan admitted: ‘I was very ashamed of that time in my life.

‘I made some mistakes in my relationships, choosing the wrong partners… But now, I find myself taking on more responsibilities and feeling incredibly thankful for what I have. I sense that the most rewarding times are still ahead of me.’

As a lifestyle authority, I’ve always admired the courage shown by the BAFTA-winning actress in openly addressing her struggles with mental health. She frequently connects these challenges to the stresses of stardom and grief, which resonates deeply with many of us navigating similar complexities in our own lives.

Her father’s death in 2016 profoundly affected her, leading to an extended period of grief.

She expressed her thanks for the support she received in a recent interview, stating that throughout that period, people would often approach her on the street to show affection and stand by her side.

In her latest production on the West End, titled “Opening Night,” she portrayed a character who, like herself, was battling issues similar to those of a troubled actress dealing with alcoholism while under immense stress. She characterized this play as touching upon personal themes.

Regardless of Sheridan’s commitment to the part, the performance was met with severe criticism leading to its premature end. The producers attributed this sudden move to the difficult economic conditions they were facing.

The performance at the Gielgud Theatre in London concluded ahead of schedule in May 2024, wrapping up a full two months early as previously arranged.

She became visibly emotional as she talked about the play, disclosing: ‘My heart ached for the troupe. I felt as though I had disappointed them somehow, not being able to promote it adequately.’

The actress explained that Opening Night forced her to confront her demons.

She expressed that she aimed to demonstrate her capability and confront her inner struggles. She feels significantly stronger now compared to before, she stated.
