Sheridan Smith is unrecognisable as murder campaign mum Ann Ming while filming tense court scenes for real-life drama I Fought The Law – after Gavin & Stacey return
As I delve deeper into this heart-wrenching tale of Ann Ming, a mother whose resilience and determination are truly inspiring, I find myself in awe of her indomitable spirit. Her unwavering fight for justice for her murdered daughter, spanning an astounding 15 years, is nothing short of heroic. It’s not every day we come across such courageous individuals who, against all odds, manage to bring about change in the law, especially when it comes to something as complex and contentious as the Double Jeopardy Law.
Ann Ming’s life experience is a testament to human resilience and the power of love for one’s child. Her journey, though filled with grief, is also a beacon of hope that reminds us all that we too can make a difference if we are willing to stand up and fight for what we believe in.
In a lighter vein, I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of this tenacious woman taking on the British legal system with her unstoppable determination and grit. I mean, who would have thought that a mother from the Midlands could bring about such change? Now, if only I had Ann Ming’s fighting spirit when it comes to finding my missing umbrella…that would be a different story!
In a remarkable transformation, Sheridan Smith barely resembled herself as she took on the role of a mourning mother named Ann Ming during filming for the soon-to-be-released drama series “I Fought The Law” in Newcastle on Monday.
43-year-old actress was spotted filming intense plotlines, after being dismissed from court due to a passionate display of emotion.
The character Ann is a tenacious woman who spent fifteen years fighting for justice, seeking punishment for the person who took her daughter’s life. Her relentless efforts led to the repeal of the UK’s ancient ‘double jeopardy’ law, which was overturned in the wake of the murder of her daughter, Julie Hogg.
Sheridan put up a struggle against the security personnel escorting her out of the building, making facial expressions of discomfort, and then engaged in a passionate dispute with a man wearing a gray suit outside on the street.
To transform into Ann she wore a curly short blonde wig and had on a navy coat and flowery blouse.
She looked hugely emotional and angry as she filmed scenes near the courthouse.
Her most recent movie project follows immediately upon her reappearance as Smithy’s sibling, Rudy, in the special Christmas episode of Gavin & Stacey.
She made a brief appearance in one scene at the start of Smithy’s wedding to Sonia.
Julie was murdered by William ‘Billy’ Dunlop but jurors failed to find him guilty – twice.
At that point, since the law then held that a person couldn’t be tried twice for the same offense, Billy’s confession didn’t lead to another trial for him.
Yet, following nearly 17 years of advocacy alongside her late husband Charles (who passed away in 2013), Ann has successfully had the law changed. At present, Billy is serving a life term in prison.
Julie, who was a mother to three-year-old, Kevin, and a wife to Andrew, was only 22 when she died.
80 days ago, I stumbled upon a heart-wrenching discovery – the unfortunate remains of my friend Julie, cleverly concealed within the confines of her terrace home’s bathroom, back in the cold month of January 1990. It was Billy who had cruelly hidden her there.
Despite my thorough exploration of the premises following her vanishing, neither I nor the law enforcement forensic units were able to locate her physical remains in the subsequent days.
In her home, the individual who took her daughter’s life strangulated her, followed by a horrific act of disfigurement. Afterward, they concealed Julie’s remains beneath the bathtub.
Currently in her mid-70s, Ann plays an advisory role during every stage of the filmmaking process for I Fought The Law.
She mentioned that her daughter’s actual murderer had been unfairly freed from charges, but later admitted to the crime. However, since it was more than eight centuries ago when the law of Double Jeopardy was established, he could only be charged with perjury for his subsequent false testimony.
I didn’t intend to let this obstacle hinder my pursuit of justice for Julie. I’m astonished that Sheridan Smith is set to portray me.
‘Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful.’
Regarding his character, Sheridan commented: “It’s an immense privilege to portray Ann Ming, a mother relentlessly advocating for justice in the murder of her daughter. She dedicated no less than fifteen years of her life to altering the Double Jeopardy Law.
She added: ‘She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.’
