Sheridan Smith drama branded “unwatchable” is now on TV

The dramatic production by Sheridan Smith, previously criticized as unbearable by certain viewers, is currently being broadcast on British television.

2023 saw the premiere of an edge-of-your-seat mystery on Paramount+, where I found myself immersed in the tale of a woman named Lori (Smith), whose vanishing act during her overseas travels had everyone guessing.

Following this turn of events, I, being Lori’s curious gaming-self, embarked on an investigation into the mysterious transactions made with my credit card on a secluded Pacific isle, using my sister Erin as my avatar in this intriguing digital quest.

In the United Kingdom, the new series made its premiere on Channel 5. Its inaugural episode aired on January 26, with subsequent episodes being shown during the past several nights.

As a gamer, I’ve heard some folks call it unbearable, but publications like the Daily Mail and The Mirror seem to have a different take on it.

One viewer expressed their displeasure on Twitter/X, stating that the content seemed to switch between past and present moments, yet it lacked clear markers to understand the sequence. They found it impossible to follow the storyline due to its sluggish and poorly executed presentation.

Yet, some individuals expressed appreciation, with one individual saying: “I truly enjoyed this; it’s refreshing to see something a bit different occasionally!

Initially, Digital Spy awarded the series only two stars upon its release, but at the same time, they commended Smith’s acting skills.

In simpler terms, we stated that “Smith stands out in this thriller with a charm that resonates with everyone her character interacts with, making some of the less engaging performances shine more brightly.” We also mentioned that “when the jungle-survival part begins, Smith shows us a side of herself we’ve never witnessed before.

Nevertheless, while The Castaways may be compared to survival dramas like Lost and Yellowjackets, it doesn’t quite reach the level of grandeur or complexity that those shows are known for.

The Castaways airs on Channel 5 and streams on My5 in the UK.
